Early Morning Tremor in Guatemala; Looters Hit Warehouse with Relief Donation
Guatemala was hit by a tremor early this morning, two weeks after the eruption of Volcan de Fuego. The epicentre of the quake was registered near the Pacific Coast less than twelve miles from Escuintla, an area at the Fuego volcano’s base that was most affected from the eruptions of gas and ash that began two weeks ago. The government of Guatemala has expressed its thanks for a one hundred thousand Belize dollar donation from the government of Belize following the eruption of the volcano which caused the death of more than one hundred persons and extensive damage to property. Guatemala has also acknowledged relief supplies made by a group of volunteers from Benque Viejo who gathered and then transported containers of supplies to the volcano victims. But according to a live report, the supplies did not end up in the hands of persons affected by the volcano. Instead, before it could be distributed, the donation was looted from a warehouse in Siquinala by persons who were not the intended recipients. The images were captured by SOL Informador and released on its Facebook, showing persons helping themselves to whatever they can use. Here’s that live report.
