Government of Belize Issues Statement on Chaotic Situation in Venezuela

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro was the target of a failed assassination attempt on Saturday in Caracas.  Six people have since been arrested for their alleged involvement in the incident.  According to Interior Minister Néstor Reverol, they were part of a group that loaded two drones with explosives and detonated them during a military parade in the capital.  In the wake of the incident, the Government of Belize promptly issued a statement condemning any acts of violence against a Head of State.  Government also reiterated that Venezuela is part of the Caribbean as a Zone of Peace, and as such, “our people deserve to reach political, social and economic development through peaceful means alone.”  News Five spoke with Chief Executive Officer Patrick Andrews of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“The government really is saddened by that situation that occurred on August fourth, the attempt on the life of the president and really we took a position to condemn it because we condemn any sort of acts of violence in that way against heads of state and families and people as a whole.  We continue to feel that Venezuela is a fellow sister country in the Caribbean and Central America and we want to ensure that their rights are protected and any attempt at basically destabilizing or taking a route other than peaceful means of looking for solutions is not something that we will be wanting to support. Yes, they have reached out through our ambassador, non-resident ambassador and we have been provided with updates over the weekend as to how the situation has progressed.  So yes, we have reached out to them and they have reached out to us.”
