Grieving Mother Blames Southern Regional for Death of Jayeisha Parchue

Jayeisha Parchue

The circumstances surrounding the death of twenty-year-old Jayeisha Parchue at the hands of doctors in Dangriga earlier this month continue to ripple across Belizean society.  The incident which resulted in the young mother losing her life while in care at the Southern Regional Hospital casts another dark shadow over the public health sector.  Parchue leaves behind a seven-month-old baby and her mother blames hospital authorities for their negligence.  Tonight, we look at Marsha Romero’s resentment caused by a situation which she firmly believes could have been handled much differently.

Voice of: Marsha Romero, Mother of Deceased

“The doctor the night said, she told me that something is squeezing my daughter’s intestine.  They should have sent her to Belize City one time.  The didn’t.  Then they are there discussing if she’s going to get cut or not going to get cut.  And that thing that was coming out of my daughter’s nose was nothing anybody would want to smell.  The doctor on duty that morning, he knew, because he said, “I don’t like what’s coming out of your daughter’s, coming out through that tube.  He asked if she had a cut, if she got a c-section for her child because she left a seven-month-old baby boy. I blame the hospital because then it could have happened differently.  They should have sent my daughter up to Belize City, they should have.  Maybe she would have still been here today.”

“I know this is a difficult experience for you to come to terms with, I mean, your daughter complained of one thing.  From your account, the doctors couldn’t seem to figure out what they wanted to do in terms of addressing this issue and then she ultimately died in their care.  Have you considered any kind of action against the hospital management, I guess on their part for the lack of responsibility to have dealt with this matter differently?”

Voice of: Marsha Romero

“Yes, I consider legal action against them. Yeah, I do.”
