Day of the Dead Celebrated in Belize
Every year, the Mexican Embassy in Belize celebrates the death of loved ones during the traditional celebration of “Dia de Los Muertos,” which is the day of the dead. The event is significant in the Mexican culture and features an altar consisting of three levels. This year the Mexican Embassy is celebrating the memory of Emeritus Ambassador, diplomat and former Secretary of Foreign Affairs Rosario Green Macias. Officer-in-Charge of Cultural and Educational Affairs at the Mexican Embassy, Diego Sapien, invites the public to celebrate the life of their loved ones who have passed away. The event is taking place at the Institute on Newtown Barracks.

“The tradition says that it has to have three level; the underworld, the everyday life and then the heaven where the dead person come visit us and also a pathway where the dead comes through our everyday lives. There is water, drinks, food because if you come from the underworld it’s going to be an exhausting travel from the underworld to our world as we know it. We offer them that’s why we offer them drinks, soft drinks even if the dead want a little bit of alcohol we also offer it to them. It is a celebration for everybody. We also want to invite the Belizean community to share or bring their photo if they want some loved one to be remembered today and we are open to any suggestion or any person who wants to celebrate their dead at the Mexican Institute.”
The event started is ongoing at this time.
