M.O.H. Investigates the Death of Corozal Baby Boy

The Ministry of Health has begun investigating the untimely death of eleven-week-old baby boy, Dion Woodeye Junior.  The baby died at the Corozal Community Hospital on December thirty-first, 2018. His mother Leah Miller and father Dion Woodeye Senior took the baby to the hospital after he started suffering from diarrhea and excessive vomiting.  They took baby Dion to the emergency section, but his case wasn’t treated with the emergency that it needed. The young couple alleges that the nurses and doctors at the hospital were negligent. According to the Director of Health Services, Doctor Marvin Manzanero, the matter is being investigated on all levels.

“In this particular case, when the issue was initially flagged on social media and then the request took a little bit more of a pressing concern. The complaint, as far as I know was not tabled at my desk. We saw something reported by one of our officers to me. I haven’t seen it as I don’t necessarily go and view things on social media. An initial report was requested immediately. We got a preliminary report yesterday morning and we had a first peer review yesterday afternoon-evening in Corozal. I got a verbal report of that this morning and I believe we will get a full written report by Monday-Tuesday of next week.”

“So, the process of the review – how does that work?”

“The entire process is reviewed by doctors and nurses of the institution – that is why it is called a peer review. We normally have somebody else outside of the institution accompany the process. And the institution does an initial report and the person who accompanies the process will do a parallel report; not the same report necessarily in case something is missed. In the case of yesterday, we had our MCH Director and somebody from a Meso-American project accompanies that process yesterday.”
