There is one suspect case of Influenza A (H1N1) at the Belize Medical Associates. It is involves a French National who travelled through Mexico, the most affected region, and made his way to Belize where he fell ill with fever and chest pains. He is still admitted at B.M.A. and according to Dr. Coyi, the patient is doing well.
Jose Sanchez
“Since the outbreak of this particular influenza have you had to medicate people with the Tamiflu?”
Dr. Marcelo Coyi, Belize Medical Associates
“Only one person so far. Only one person at our institution that is a suspected case. We are part of the surveillance that we report daily to the Ministry of Health and we are working together in the surveillance and when the time comes for therapy, also we will do it together.”
Jose Sanchez
“This case that you had, the suspect case that you gave the Tamiflu, did you report that to the Ministry?”
Dr. Marcelo Coyi
“Oh yes. Everyday we report to the Ministry. We report all cases on Influenza, as the ordinary influenza. Then we report suspicious cases in a different form and it is those suspicious cases that we do the double and we send one to the CAREC through the Ministry Of Health which must reach the lab by eleven o’clock each morning.”
Jose Sanchez
“This patient that you have, how is he doing?”
Dr. Marcelo Coyi
“Very well, very well. And we are awaiting the results sometime today and we are unconfirm whether it is H-one-N-one infection.”
The Director of Health Services should receive the results of the second batch of cases that were sent to CAREC in Trinidad sometime tonight. We will have those results as soon as they come in.
