Deadly flu virus reaches closer to the Northern border
While there are no local confirmed cases of the Influenza A H1N1, there are reports today that the deadly flu is moving dangerously close to Belize. In a midday status report, the Ministry of Health said there are three confirmed cases in neighbouring localities in Calderitas in the outskirts of Chetumal, Carrillo Puerto, a stop-over point, and Cancun, all places frequented by Belizeans travelling across the border. The Ministry of Health also revealed that there are thirty-nine suspected and eleven cases hospitalized in Quintana Roo. Despite the looming threat, stakeholders of the Ministry of Education, NEMO, Customs, Immigration and the Ministry of Health have agreed to the re-opening of the Corozal Commercial Free Zone beginning May sixth on a reduced schedule from seven a.m. to six p.m. A decision was also taken in respect of the casinos, bars and discotheques which decidedly will remain closed until May eleventh.
