We also spoke with the Directorate of Foreign Trade on this new plan. Director General Andy Sutherland says that they want buy in from the wider Belizean public because trade touches all of our lives at different levels. Here’s how he explains they will seek to make this plan resonate with the rest of the country.

“A part of that implementation strategy is that a sensitization and awareness plan. This plan basically targets our level of the Belizean public sector, private sector, academia and general public. So we will have targeted sounds bytes for each of those so the man on the street can basically understand what we want to achieve with this trade policy. We will gauge our success when every other Belizean can leverage this policy to be able to partake in the national economy. Trade is one of those areas that cut across the entire economy. It is related to education, ICT sector, gender; all of these issues are context within the policy. The policy basically articulates how we go about bringing in youth, gender, entrepreneurship on board towards trade development within Belize.”
