Cancer Society prepares for annual walk
A number of activities commemorating Cancer Awareness Month had to be cancelled because of Hurricane Iris, but the annual Cancer Walk, from Ladyville to Belize City, will take place this Saturday. The Belize Cancer Society will provide free transportation in an effort to encourage people to come out early that day and enlist in the fight against cancer. The society’s president, Higinia Leslie, says the Walk is one event that has helped make people more aware of the disease.
Higinia Leslie, President, Belize Cancer Society
“The basic purpose is to bring awareness to the public in general, since we find that by having a walk and people participating in the walk they become of what it is. This encourages people to call the office and ask questions and even ask to assist with lectures at different offices or schools.
On Saturday we would like to ask all participants to please assemble at the Pallotti bus stop at 4:30 so that we can move off to Ladyville and the walk can start at 5:00 a.m. sharp. We’re having transportation courtesy of Novelo’s Bus Services, so there will not be a fee for boarding these buses for the walk. The walk will be diverted this year to the building site of the Juliet Orosco Soberanis Hospice Cancer Centre, which is located on Mercy Lane off Coney Drive. This is directly behind the Belize Elementary School.”
There will be T-shirts and pins on sale, and at the end of the
Walk participants will receive a refreshing treat. Leslie says
the society will be holding activities throughout the year to keep people informed about cancer.
