Accident Victim Cry Negligence on the K.H.M.H.
A mother and son are accusing the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital of negligence. The mother, Maureen Staine, says she will also be suing the hospital after her son Steven Staine was discharged days after he was involved in a serious motorcycle accident in Belize City. At that time, Staine says doctors assured the family that her son did not suffer any serious injury. For context, Steven Staine was involved in a motorcycle accident in Belize City on April fourteenth. He remained hospitalized for one week and was sent home. There he remained unconscious for two more weeks after which he woke up. His family took care of him but he began to complain, repeatedly, of pain to his shoulder and right knee. According to the family, they did not have reason to suspect that it was anything serious since doctors had done an x-ray on Staine and had indicated that all was well. But the pains soon became unbearable and concerning and Staine re-visited the K.H.M.H. It wasn’t until then that, after further exams, he discovered he had broken his shoulder and possibly his knee in the accident. His body had begun healing but without the proper medical attention, and today, Staine says he has to face a series of discomforts and expenses.
Steven Staine, Accident Victim
“He was like you just left here last week in the ambulance complaining about your head, your hand and your chest and nothing was wrong with you. I told him I need you to close your mouth and listen to me because I am the one that’s in the pain. This is what the doctor said. He is like, well I will prescribe an x-ray for you and come see me. When I came back, he opened it and he said, “Mister, you are right. Your arm was broken and it looks like it is healing by itself and becoming a fracture.” So then, I was like how is it that the entire time you guys were telling my family nothing is wrong with me; that’s what I need to know and that is when he prescribed a bone doctor to me. The way I see it is that they neglected me and now every day I am losing money. I can’t even hold my kids; I can’t even get back a job. How come? Now the doctors are telling me that the whole time I was in the hospital they could have helped me, but no one referred me to them or anything like that. They said they cannot do any surgery because the wound is old and it might get worse if they try to touch it so they can only help me with therapy. I am so devastated with the state of what they are putting me through. I just want the hospital to be more responsible and take care of people better than this because this is really crazy.”
