World Pediatric Project Hosts Plastic Surgery Mission
The World Pediatric Project is hosting its annual plastic surgery mission on Sunday. A team, made up of two surgeons, is arriving from Richmond, Virginia this weekend and will be treating patients up to the age of twenty-one. They will be seeing patients with a number of conditions, some of whom may require plastic surgery. Patients must first attend the clinic on Sunday to be evaluated by the team. Teresita Sanchez of the World Pediatric Project shares more about clinic that will be held in Dangriga.
Teresita Sanchez, Office Assistant, World Pediatric Project
“We will be seeing patients that have cleft lip and palate, ear deformities, skin – burns and scar revisions, lumps in the neck areas or head; or any child with difficulty breathing.”
Andrea Polanco
“This service will be offered where and what date?”
Teresita Sanchez
“This will be on Sunday, January 26th. It will be at the Southern Regional Polyclinic. It is right next door to the Southern Regional Hospital. Clinic starts at eight. We always advise our patients to reach a little earlier. We go by number and it is a first come, first serve basis. They can travel from any place. It doesn’t matter from what district. It is open to all the children. One thing I want to note is that the cut off age is from birth to 21-years-old.”
Andrea Polanco
“For this you will have surgeons coming into the country – is it a big team that is coming?”
Teresita Sanchez
“Yes. So, this is a team for roughly ten staff coming in. We have two surgeons coming in. The clinic is only Monday. We don’t have any clinic days during the week because surgeries are done between Monday and Thursday, there at Southern Regional, as well.”
Andrea Polanco
“So, the clinic is just to go in and do an evaluation and that sort of thing?”
Teresita Sanchez
“Yes. Most cases don’t really require surgery at the same time. Some surgeries can be delayed or the child reaches a certain age before any kinds of surgery is done especially because it is plastic surgery we are doing. We always recommend our patients to come in even if it is just for an evaluation or if the parent is not ready to do surgery they can still come in and we can get their name in our system and we can call them back. The doctors always do this evaluation to monitor, as well. We pride ourselves that we have the same doctors coming in and so they have patients that they have seen for the past ten years.”
