Secretary General of the O.A.S. visits with the Prime Minister
The Secretary General of the O.A.S., Luis Almagro, today met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Wilfred “Sedi” Elrington as well as with Prime Minister Dean Barrow. Soon after his inauguration, Guatemalan President Alejandro Giammattei asked the O.A.S. to facilitate a meeting with PM Barrow either in Belmopan or at the Adjacency Zone at the end of this month. Clearly it has not happened and a release today makes no mention of the proposed meeting. Prime Minister Barrow, however, spoke on the implementation of the Confidence Building Measures along the Adjacency Zone, where there have been sporadic flare-ups. Both sides agreed on the need to continue the full implementation of the C.B.M.s as part of the efforts to promote better relations between Belize and Guatemala. There were also discussions on the work of the O.A.S. at the Adjacency Zone, primarily in the areas of promoting a culture of peace and conducting verifications.
