Coronavirus Targets Immune System

Jorge Hidalgo

The public is strongly advised to take preventative measures to reduce the risk of transmission.  When coughing or sneezing, cover the mouth in the inside of the elbows or inside a tissue to be disposed immediately.

Dr. Jorge Hidalgo, Intensivist

“Unfortunately, in some particular cases especially, the extremes of life, the newborns are more vulnerable because they are in the process of strengthening, and thus at this age they are not strong enough and they are vulnerable, as well as the elderly people.  Their immune system is already weakened and unfortunately also, as we are getting older we develop many other conditions like congestive heart failure, pulmonary problems, kidney failure, diabetes and also patients that are undergoing chemotherapy, patients with AIDS.  Those patients immune system are not strong enough to fight the virus because essentially to fight the virus, our own body is designed to create antibodies to attack the virus but in those extremes of life or patients with some medical conditions they are not strong enough to create these types of antibodies and they don’t have enough time because of course the virus gets them weakened and those are essentially the patients that their lives are threatened.”
