Belizean Businessman Accused of Meddling in Hong Kong Affairs
Chinese national Lee Henley Hu Xiang, who holds Belizean citizenship, remains locked up in China and the Chinese government has indicated that it will prosecute Xiang. He is accused of providing funds to “meddle” in Hong Kong affairs. Al Jazeera and news outlets from Hong Kong say that investigations by the national security agency confirmed that the suspect provided a large amount of funds to hostile elements in the United States, colluded with foreign anti-China forces to intervene in Hong Kong affairs and funded the implementation of criminal activities that endangered national security. Xiang, who lives in China, was arrested on November twenty-sixth by the Guangzhou State Security Bureau for allegedly funding criminal activities that endanger national security. He stands accused of funding hostile forces based in the United States, sponsoring foreign organizations and individuals to damage the country’s national security, supporting anti-China activities in Hong Kong, and cooperating with external forces to intervene in Hong Kong affairs. Xiang is the first overseas Belizean citizen to be charged with working with foreign groups to intervene in Hong Kong.
