Making Masks Work in Orange Walk

After weeks of being under lockdown, Belizeans across the country get to move a bit more and return to work.  There is a new normal though; everyone must wear a mask; not wearing one in public is in direct conflict with the new laws of the state of emergency. Orange Walk has no reported case of COVID-19 and as the hustle and bustle returned to the streets, everyone donned a mask today. Mayor Kevin Bernard says that since COVID-19 was confirmed, residents adhered to the rules attached to the State of Emergency Regulations.

“If you go out in town right now I can tell you that you can find ninety, ninety-five percent of people wearing a mask. There is still one or two of those persons who would want to think that they will slip through the cracks but all in all if you go to the shops, if you go to the banks you will see people wearing their masks. I think what is also helping is even the business establishment are now making it that responsibility on their customer to ensure that if you don’t have a mask we cannot serve you. Tht is important. I must say though that from the very beginning of COVID-19 the people of Orange Walk had taken it very seriously and I think this is one of the reasons there have been no spread here in Orange Walk and the entire district because you have seen a lot of people holding back, staying home, one person in the family going to the shop. So we have been adhering and if we continue this way we can slowly rid ourselves as a country, as a nation from this virus.”
