Persons in Quarantine do not Qualify for Proxy Voting
Where it concerns Belizeans in the diaspora who are eligible to vote, Tamai also says that similarly, they too would be subjected to the same protocols as persons who are in quarantine. While they won’t be able to identify persons who are COVID positive, the same rules apply at all polling stations.
Josephine Tamai, Chief Elections Officer
“We won’t know who those persons are and like I said, as long as they have the proof from the authority to be out then those persons can be at the polling station and vote. Like I said, it‘s not because somebody is in quarantine means that they are positive or risky. It‘s just that it‘s the Ministry of Health who basically determines how long people are in quarantine for and when people are required to be in quarantine.”

“And the proxy votes, will they be able to do so from abroad by way of proxy or is it only for essential workers on that day?”
Josephine Tamai
“When it comes to proxy voting, the law is clear in regards to who can use it and persons in quarantine are not one of those categories.”
