PAHO Director visits

The director of the Pan American Health Organization, PAHO, is in Belize for a familiarization visit, he will also present computers to the Ministry of Health to assist with the creation of the National Health Information System. News Five spoke with Dr. George Alleyne and Minister of Health Jose Coye this morning at the Phillip S. W. Goldson International Airport.

“It is a custom of all directors of the organizations, to visit the countries within the Americas and I try to visit all the countries in the Americas with some periodicity. The two basic purposes: to talk to the national authorities, to talk to our staff, to look at our technical of cooperation and discuss how the national priorities in health and our cooperation fit together.”

“Well as you are well aware that we are very much in the health sector reform program and PAHO has been playing a very major role in our health care services in the country. In particularly at the preventative level, the primary environmental care level and they are also presently engaged in the building the of the National Health Information System for the country. Dr Alleyne as the Director, is here in Belize to share with us the equity in health and tonight he’ll be giving a talk on that and it will be open to the press and for discussions. So the purpose of this visit as he said is merely to keep in touch with the members of the PAHO countries and also the WHO. He is also to Regional Director for the Americas of WHO.”
