KHMH honors doctor from Shiner?s Hospital

Story PictureToday a brief ceremony was held at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital to pay tribute to Dr. Jack Sheridan. Fourteen years ago Sheridan arrived in Belize to assist Belize’s crippled children get the treatment they need at the Shriner’s Hospital in the United States. Since then, Sheridan who works through the Illinois Rotary District Belizean Crippled Children’s Project, has made annual trips to screen young patients and refer them to Shriner’s. Today it was the good doctors’ turn to be in the spotlight. Sheridan who was moved to tears by the appreciation award ceremony said he did not expect the award.

Dr. Jack Sheridan, Recipient, Appreciation Award

?Well as I said it caught me by surprise it was spontaneous I think it was a culmination of a good friendship, a wonderful professional relationship with everybody and I as said I am honored, I am humble. Its nice to know that I am looked upon as part of the medical community as well as the community in general and it is just a real honour for me.?

Dr. John Waight, Acting Superintendent

?He works with the Shriner which has been accepting our patients for the past twenty-five years. Then for the last twelve to thirteen years he has been coming down here to help select those children who can benefit from attention there and more importantly to review the ones that are treated there. So the work that has been done today has saved about twenty passages back to the U.S. This is all donation, there is more in the revolving fund so that more people can go up and get treatment.?

Edward Broaster, Former patient

?I had a spinal problem. My spine had a curvature of sixty-eight degrees. It was straightened and my future looked bleak but after a successful operation and a remarkable recovery I am standing here today as a successful police officer.?

Besides children, Sheridan also assists with the diagnosis and prognosis of adult orthopedic cases.
