25 Unreported COVID Cases Detected

Michel Chebat

Earlier this month, a routine check by health officials led to the discovery of twenty-five confirmed COVID-19 cases that had not being reported. These were flagged by the Ministry of Health and Wellness during a quality assurance inspection on its data reporting system at a medical facility in the west.  Official information suggests that over the past six weeks, seven hundred and fifty-three persons were tested and twenty-five positive cases were identified, but not reported in the national data.  While these cases received treatment and surveillance was done as per established protocol, Health and Wellness Minister Michel Chebat spoke to the media today about these cases.

“The EPI unit conducts an audit frequently and in the audit they conducted, they found that there were twenty-five cases that were not reported and that has been corrected. And measures have been put in place so that the laboratories who are doing the tests make sure that the information is being brought in on a timely manner.”

The COVID-19 infographic shows that there are thirty-eight active cases currently in Belize. Of the twelve thousand four hundred and fifty-two confirmed cases since the pandemic broke in the country, three hundred and seventeen deaths have been recorded and twelve thousand and eighty-eight persons have recovered from the virus.
