Is Variant Responsible for Increase in Cases?
As the number of active COVID-19 cases continues to rise at a rapid rate, there are suspicions that a new and more transmissible variant of the virus may already be spreading across the country. That is yet to be proven, and Doctor Cuellar says he hopes that the Ministry of Health and Wellness do the necessary work to find out.
Dr. Fernando Cuellar, Internist, Belize Medical Associates
“I think human behavior, people behavior, is number one. I think we should still be very cautious about how we gather and practice the three basic things we have been thought for the past eighteen months. And, I indeed am suspicious that we might have a variant in Belize. Unfortunately, we cannot prove or disprove it. But, from what I am seeing it is quite possible, very possible that we have a variant in Belize nuh. And I am hoping that the authorities can do the necessary studies to see if indeed that is the case. The variant is more of transmissibility. It is easier to catch. It is easier to transmit from one person to another. That might be playing a role in why we are seeing the numbers creeping up.”
