More COVID Cases in Young People; Suspected Cases in Children

Adrian Coye

Belizeans are watching with growing concern the increase in COVID-19 cases, but what they may not be aware of is the change in demographics of the disease. According to officials at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, there have only been two cases of COVID in vaccinated persons; both of them were cancer patients.  But it is the unvaccinated, younger people especially, who are now testing positive, or being investigated as possible cases.  Doctor Adrian Coye was one of the guests on Channel Five’s Open Your Eyes Morning Show on Thursday.  He spoke about the change in the age group, the symptoms and severity they are seeing.

Dr. Adrian Coye, Acting Director of Health Services, K.H.M.H.

“I can account for the fact that yes, we are seeing more younger population….in the twenties age group. We have had a few pediatric cases for the year and we have also had many more pediatric cases under investigation presenting with diarrheal type of illnesses because it is something that we look out for. So we have seen that as an upsurge. But converting this to positivity is still quite low. In terms of the severity, again, it gives a lose assurance that.”

Marleni Cuellar, Host, Open Your Eyes

“Is it what we saw before or is it different?”

Dr. Adrian Coye

“I think it is different. We can’t really account for the… we keep talking about one variant. But I want people to have a different view of it that there will always be mutations and variations. It doesn’t matter what name they have, the reality is that we have to conquer the virus in the ways that we already have. The strategies we have already, we don’t need to prove it again.”
