Santa Elena, Toledo is on COVID Lockdown for Two Weeks

Michel Chebat

A new taskforce will also be introduced to administer existing COVID measures in places such as shops and stores, public offices, as well as other business establishments. While a lockdown of the southern communities of Barranco, Midway and Conejo expires on Saturday, similar confinement has been put in place in Santa Elena, Toledo District. A surge in the number of positive cases in Santa Elena has forced government to quarantine the entire village for a period of two weeks.

Michel Chebat, Minister of Health & Wellness

“Additionally, we are going to be implementing what is going to be called a COVID enforcement unit which will have as its primary task the enforcement of the public health measures and these individuals will have the authority to go into all business establishments and public facilities to ensure that those who are present in those establishments are observing the public health measures.  And additionally, we are going to be locking down for a period of two weeks the village of Santa Elena in the Toledo District.  We have been experiencing a large number of positive cases coming out of that village and we believe that the only way to control is to lock down that village.  And so, as of today, for a period of two weeks they are going to be lock down.  As we did with Barranco, Conejo and Midway, we are going to be providing them with water, food and a stipend for the period of two weeks. There is an increase in numbers on the south side of Belize City which we are monitoring very, very closely.  So we are at the monitoring stage with that.  We do not yet feel that we are at a stage where we need to lock down and so we’re not quite there yet in Belize City.”
