Police Officer Jumps the Border to Mexico
Border jumpers continue to be a problem, but the public usually does not expect a police officer to be one of them. Yet an officer attached to Precinct One in Belize City spent a night behind bars in Mexico after he was intercepted by Mexican authorities for illegal entry. PC Mark Hinds, told investigators that he jumped the border from Belize, using a canoe, to purchase mechanical parts for his motorcycle. He was handed over to Belizean authorities. He is now being dealt with by the Professional Standards Branch.
ACP Joseph Myvett, Head, National Crimes Investigation Branch
“What we know so far is that PC Mark Hinds, of Precinct one in Belize City, who resides in San Joaquin Village the Corozal District, he was handed over to border personnel on Thursday, over to immigration and police officers at the border where he was taken into custody. He was interviewed where he indicated to officers that he had crossed the border in order to purchase mechanical parts for his motorcycle. At the time though, he did have a PCR test which he had recently taken. So, an ongoing investigation is being carried out by the professional standards branch in relation to him at this time.”
Sr Supt. Calbert Flowers, Commander, Professional Standards Branch
“Hinds is being dealt with at this moment internally. We are working closely with immigration. And, if immigration agrees to bring the criminal charge against him, we will support them. We cannot condone this type of behavior. He is being treated as a regular border jumper.”
