Challenges & Successes with Blended Learning at St. John Vianney
The Ministry of Education has reported that a number of students have dropped out of school due to the challenges brought about by COVID-19 pandemic. While some have not been attending the online classes, primary school students have not been picking up or returning their learning packages. Over at Saint John Vianney Catholic Primary School in Belize City, it was no different. Principal Felix Sutherland says that last year’s blended approach to learning was a challenge.
Felix Sutherland, Principal, Saint John Vianney Catholic School
“Last year was a game changer. We have tried everything we know how. We have made mistakes, we have made strides and so we are hopeful that we will do better this time with the help of all those who can help. The paper-based was very challenging in the sense that students did not pick up all their packages; some picked up all their packages, but returned some. So the full residual effect of that, unfortunately we can’t say we got maximum return for those. The online classes – those who participated, it went well. Unfortunately, majority of our students were unable to benefit from that because of the lack of device and internet connectivity.”

“So going into this new school year, especially this hybrid that is going to continue, how do we address this issue?”
Felix Sutherland
“We are addressing it in all folds. We voiced our concerns to the business community; we solicit on the part of our students. We try to retool our teachers to better equip them to offer better services and we will continue to network with those who are willing to provide meaningful assistance to the residents of this area and to help in the development of Belize.”
