Chebat Says KHMH Bill Will be Reviewed by Cabinet

We also asked about the five hundred thousand dollars the Government of Belize reportedly owes to the KHMH for renovations done to the COVID unit. Minister Chebat says the documents need to be reviewed by Cabinet. CEO Cansino says KHMH already has a commitment from the Ministry of Finance.

Michel Chebat, Minister of Health and Wellness

“I think the Chairman of KHMH has jumped a little bit ahead of himself and said this debt is owed. I have since asked him to please send us some documentation to show how that debt arose so that we can deal with it in Cabinet.”

“You are saying that when those documents arrive there will be that intent to pay?”

Michel Chebat

“Yeah, it has to be reviewed by us, and it has to be taken to Cabinet to see how it arose. And, if there is an obligation of how we can assist, I think we can’t forget that KHMH is our national referral hospital. And so, we have an obligation to them to make sure that their doors remain open, to make sure they have the proper equipment, human resources and medicine to provide health care to our country.”

Chandra Cansino, CEO, KHMH

“The Ministry of Finance has already committed to providing the reimbursement as soon as we are able to complete the paper work and give that to them. So, we need to work on that as soon we possibly can.”
