Breastfeeding mural unveiled at K.H.M.H.

Even though the saying, “Breast is Best” has been drilled into our heads for years now, many Belizean children are still being denied breast milk. Today, the staff of the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital unveiled an informative visual aid to remind mothers of the special gift they can give their infants.

Michele Perdomo, Artist

“This is National Breastfeeding Week. We are trying to raise people’s awareness for the importance of breastfeeding for healthier babies, happier families and a stronger Belize.”

Louise Neal, Matron, K.H.M.H.

“When we see this billboard we see that it’s a very nice picture to be out here in the lobby so that when people come into the hospital, number one, they realize that it is a baby friendly hospital. And number two, that looking at the picture and looking at the steps, it will help them to realize, especially for those who are expecting babies or have babies, that they should also breastfeed their babies.”

The smaller painting will be displayed in the maternity ward. Matron Neal says that although the hospital has not attained all the goals of the baby friendly initiative program, she hopes these new additions will motivate mothers to improve the health of Belizean children.
