Crooked Tree Gets New Health Clinic

Dr. Melissa Diaz-Musa

It is known for its cashew fests and birding adventures, Crooked Tree Village, located just over thirty miles away from Belize City off the Philip Goldson Highway, now has a spanking new health centre. While the facility will be officially opened on Thursday, it has been in use for a couple weeks now. Deputy Manager of the Central Health Region, Dr. Melissa Diaz-Musa told News Five today that since Belize has been seeing a reduction in our positivity rate for the past month or so, the Ministry of Health and Wellness has been trying to refocus its attention on other health diseases. And now there are human resources to spread around to other areas of the country to cater to other health needs.

Dr. Melissa Diaz-Musa, Deputy Manager, Central Health Region

“We are opening up, officially, a new health facility in Crooked Tree on Thursday to provide primary care services and some secondary services to the population of Crooked Tree. So we’ve been there getting the place ready. We have a public health nurse there and mobiles that go to Crooked Tree every four to six weeks. The mobiles are integrated mobiles so they don’t only go to Crooked Tree; they go to all the River Valley and parts of Ladyville as well. It has been opened already. The nurse is living there at Crooked Tree and it opens from eight to five at this point and the weekends – most weekends. Usually with the rural health staff, they would have one weekend that they won’t be in and that’s usually announced to the village when they won’t be there. And I want to also take this opportunity to say for the Belize District; Cleopatra White is back open for service the way it was before – primary care, public health and some secondary care as well. It’s no longer just the flu facility but we’re also seeing patients with any infectious symptoms, cough, colds, diarrhea, vomiting, sore throat, and you can go back in for your usual check-ups and as well for the management of diabetes, high blood pressure, pre-natal care and immunizations for children.”
