Five Hundred Police Officers to Benefit from N.H.I. Services

Police officers commanding the various divisions in Belize City toured several National Health Insurance clinics in Belize City today. The tour was organized to identify areas where security can be heightened within these clinics. Additionally, a program is being rolled out for police officers in Belize City to become members of the N.H.I. That program is scheduled to launch in October. We heard from A.C.P. Howell Gillett, the Commander of Eastern Division about today’s tour.

“What we are doing here today is that we are visiting all the polyclinics on the south and north side of Belize City. This is all in an effort to review the safety and security of these institutions because you and I know that gang members, criminals, have to access health care facilities. They come to these polyclinics, like this one that they are at today. And when they come together that could be problems. So, we are here today to see how best we can mitigate the effects of those problems. In tandem to that, NHI is offering to some five hundred police officers to become a part of the NHI program which is very good for our officers. Too often we hear of our officers getting sick and cannot access health care facilities as a consequence of the cost of accessing those facilities. So, this is welcoming to us and it is a pilot project, meaning there are plans to increase the numbers. We want to do it not only at three precincts, but at the other precincts and other areas in the Belize District and from there we take it country wide wherever NHI is.”

“We know that Police Department and the police men are on a daily stress and that also creates a health problem. But, if they have another risk factor like hypertension and obesity, we are also trying to see how we best create a program for them so that we decrease those factors, because we know that they are very important people for our society.”
