CARICOM Leaders meets with the Prime Minister of Canada

This morning at the Forty-fourth Caricom Heads of Government Meeting in Nassau, Bahamas, the leaders of member states met with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. The Canadian leader was one of the special guests at the meeting. The Prime Minister of Canada shared his commitment to strengthening ties with the Caribbean following discussions with CARICOM heads. He also announced that Canada would be providing funding to the Caribbean to address the effects of climate change.

“Today I am announcing 44.8 million dollars in new funding to tackle climate crisis in the Caribbean. This funding will support projects with regional organization like the 5 Cs and the Caribbean biodiversity fund that will improve marine and coastal ecosystem management, increase water security and help governments respond to the impacts of climate change and natural disasters. We know that one of the significant challenges many CARICOM countries face in dealing with climate change is accessing climate and concessional financing. Canada applauds Prime Minister Motley’s leadership on the Bridgetown initiative which is reenergizing the conversation on the international financial institution reform so that they can better respond to the overlapping health, climate, debt and liquidity crises affecting many CARICOM Members.”

As part of the efforts to restore order in Haiti, Prime Minister Trudeau also announced a number of initiatives, including additional sanctions, providing Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected vehicles and NAVY Vessels.
