An Update on Dengue Cases in Belize

Kevin Bernard

Back in August, we reported that dengue figures were up and had surpassed the number of cases for the entire year of 2022. The data showed that the clinically detected cases were concentrated in Orange Walk and Cayo. On Monday, when the media caught up with Health and Wellness Minister Kevin Bernard, he gave an update on the cases.

Kevin Bernard, Minister of Health & Wellness

“We had some issues with dengue. It is manageable. Yes, we have seen where there have been some increases in one location; if I am not mistaken, I think it was in the west here or in Belize City that there were a huge amount of cases in a two-week period. But we have been able to see that now starting to take a trend. Our people have been going out, our vector unit has been going out to ensure that they are spraying. And again, we just have to keep encouraging people that while it’s something that has been happening in the entire region and of course, we see it in other parts of the country – in Mexico there is a huge issue with dengue. So, we just have to ensure that we are managing it and it’s controlled. At the end of the day, the people here at our surveillance unit have to be out on the ground making sure that they are doing the monitoring on a regular basis.”
