U.D.P. Stands with Guyana in Territorial Dispute with Venezuela

The United Democratic Party has come out in full support of the preservation of the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Guyana.  The U.D.P. stands with CARICOM, the Commonwealth of Nations, as well as the Organization of American States in calling for Venezuela to respect international law and abide by the 1899 arbitral award, the 1966 Geneva Agreement, the 2018 decision of the United Nations Secretary General, as well as the December first, 2023 decision of the International Court of Justice so as to maintain peace and stability in the region.  Opposition Leader Shyne Barrow shares the position of his party.

“The International Democratic Union and the CDU, the Caribbean Democratic Union, we issued a statement on Thursday.  I believe I shared it with you because we had the International Democratic Union meeting of global leaders in Washington, D.C. last week and at the close of the meeting, the executive met and issued a statement.  But again, it is very disturbing, very troubling that Nicolas Maduro and the Venezuelan government have totally, the procedures of the International Court of Justice which they agreed to.  For Belizeans who may not understand the history of Venezuela‘s claim to two-thirds of of Guyana’s land. President Maduro and his government called for a referendum that totally rejected the agreement that they entered in with Venezuela and Guyana in 1966 and said that the ICJ had no jurisdiction and rejected whatever the ICJ has to say.  That is a terrible act that would only threaten peace and stability in the region.”
