Teddy Murrillo Jr. killed during weekend of violence

Teddy Murillo Jr.
Another weekend: another murder in the city. The latest victim for the month of February is twenty-one year old Teddy Murillo Jr. who was gunned down as he headed home early on Saturday morning. And like in a number of past homicides, the family is grappling for answers on what led to the brutal murder of the student, who was not known to be in any trouble. While Danalyn and Teddy Murillo Sr. are seeking justice, a law enforcement official is accused of committing the heinous act. He has been released, but there is a lot of speculation that the murder spilled off from a romantic affair. News Five’s Isani Cayetano also went looking for answers today.
Isani Cayetano, Reporting
It is reported that Teddy Murillo Jr., an agriculture student at the University of Belize, was shot multiple times and left for dead while heading home on Waight Street early Sunday. At about one-thirty that morning it is believed that Murillo was approached by occupants of a vehicle who shot him a total of seven times. Strangely, he was not discovered until some two and a half hours later when residents in the area alerted police of a body in a nearby drain.
Teddy Murillo Sr.; Victim’s Father
“Dehn tell me dehn find one Teddy Murillo lying eena di drain by Waight Street. When get di get di response three-thirty di morning. And when I talk to him and ih said one Teddy Murillo I said no noh dah Teddy Murillo deh. He seh yes man and he show me di ID. I seh okay and as soon as he show me dat, I lef he right eena my house and I take off after di man.”
It is speculated that Teddy Jr., who family and friends describe as a devout Adventist, was gunned down by a police officer who lives a stone’s throw from the Murillo residence on Nurse Findley’s Crescent.

Teddy Murillo Sr.
“Well rumors di seh it and I believe it. I hundred percent believe because alright mi son get shoot one-thirty. When we gone by di crime scene di guys tell me when ih hear di first two shot because dah noh like di regular shooting. When he wake up and look pan ih clock it was one-thirty in di morning, alright one-thirty. When shooting like dat round ya and da many shooting happen and as soon as di last shot stop di ambulance and di police deh come. Why two hours later dehn come and noh even wah ambulance come out deh. And after dat seven-thirty dat dah what—three-thirty to seven-thirty—later dehn wah come, come inform me when dehn had di documents of him weh deh coulda come straight dah my house because ih driver’s license and ih social security dehn had so dehn know exactly weh part di person live.
A timeline issued by a relative indicates that Murillo and a few friends were approached by the same officer earlier that night at BTL Park. Incidentally, a witness testified to hearing Murillo speaking with the officer minutes before the shooting took place. That officer was detained for questioning in connection with the murder but later released.
Teddy Murillo Sr.
“And as Ih release and deh put ah right back pan di streets. I get wah person tell mi dat—and ah noh di call no name anyway—as soon as di man come out ya ih start to di patrol and ih gone and gone harass wah guy by 88, threaten ah to.”
Isani Cayetano
“Now Mr. Murillo there have been reports regarding this particular incident that your son may have been a suspect in a burglary, any truth to that?”
Teddy Murrillo Sr.
“Di person could ah tell me dat if I have wah pint or whatsoever I have eena my hand I would lash deh eena deh face fi come tell me dat. My son noh need fi go burglar nobody. Ih no need to. Ih have everything we ih mi need upstairs eena di house.”
According to the chronology of events, Murillo was last seen at about one-twenty on Sunday morning by Adrian Menzies, a friend of his, who spoke to him in front of Princess Hotel. Teddy Murillo Sr. says information from the Police Department has not been forthcoming.
Teddy Murillo Sr.
“Well so far di police noh di tell we nothing so we just gotta wait fi weh dehn di say. We just di try gather information.”
Isani Cayetano
“What has that been like?”
Teddy Murillo Sr.
“Well we wah know weh happen and why dehn shoot mi son.”
While the family waits for justice to take its course all Danalyn Murillo has to remember her son by is a graduation photo. Reporting for News Five, Isani Cayetano.

@MACAL RIVER………..plz show me where in the Bible it says that Christians are not allowed to be out at 1:30 in the morning???? As for the policeman who supposedly committed the crime, all i know is that in Belize we seh, “if dah noh soh dah nearly soh”. @BORN BELIZEAN……..minister Perdomo is one man, how in the world can one man change crime, a revolving cylce that has many many reasons for its existence. Minister Perdomo is one man, i’m sick and tired of hearing ppl blame the minister for crime, isn’t that the job of the POLICEMEN. It’s everbodys civil duty to help minimize crime…….CRIME in BELIZE will never go away because nobody NEVER EVER wants to talk, and I can understand that too cause they are afraid, but lets not blame one person all the time for crime……….how ridiculous. We all know that they are bad policemen but what must we do, you can’t just arrest and charged someone for a crime under suspicion and “hear seh”. Everything has a system, the thing is to have that system work properly which is obviously not, being that all these bad policemen still exist……….fix the system and we will see results. For eg. so the policeman with the ski mask did not kill Teddy Murillo, so which robbery was he involve in??????? see my point. To the Murillo family, be comforted in knowing that Teddy has gone to be with our God and knowing that someday you will all see him in Glory, walk the streets of gold with him soemday. God bless you all and find peace in our loving, forgiving God.
Hey its been 2 weeks since the death of Ted and justice still has not been given to the family. Its also been 2 sabbaths without him and to me mylife and church has been very dull without him. I really miss but I know i will see him come ressurection day. I continue to pray for the Murillo family that God will allow them to put him in everything they do. I continue to also pray for myself and for the PERSON who committed this horrific act. I urgee all who saw or heard something to come and testify against this man. Don’t be afraid or be intemidated by the police officer, God will be your protector.
“if I hurt someones feeling I am sorry but again we cannot serve two masters at the same time.PERIOD” said Macal…it’s not what we say but it’s how we say it. Macal to me it sounds like you are already judging Teddy…Teddy n his friends didn’t commit any crime by being at the park after midnight. If I understood clearly, they went to church; after which, they went to the park….me n my friends used to do it many time when we were younger and was in the youth group. Being at the park doesn’t mean that they were doing anything illegal. After all there wasn’t any report saying he was intoxicated by any means…These kids could have been out there innocently having biblical discussion. I know for a fact that when you are talking biblical the time goes by so fast you dont’ even realize it so for you to stress the point that you cannot serve two masters at the same time sounds a bit judgemental to me…who said he was serving two masters? Nonetheless, it doesn’t matter what he was doing out there, no one had the right to take someone else’s life…another thing, you said “according to the news I heard it seems that some robbery took place and the police was blaming Teddy, again what was he doing out at this time, yet I am not saying he committed any robbery, see!! wrong place at the wrong time” you cannot say that bcaz there is not substancial evidence that any robbery or attempted robbery went down so being at the wrong place at the wrong time doen’t have anything to do with that. ah idiot thing that!!! it doesn’t matter where he was or what he was doing no one had the right to shoot him and left him there to die. If this was supposedly a robbery then why is it that he’s the only one who was targeted? Don’t you think they would have targeted all of them? After all the boy was almost at home. This sounds like intentional to me… They are just trying to find an excuse to cover up their tracks talking about an attempted robbery. I guess you are never out of your house pass midnight by any mean nuh? Macal words “guess what ME & soldier, the truth is what hurts!!!! but you cannot serve two masters at the same time, like it or not” you cannot talk about the truth hurts becasue you don’t have a clue what the truth is… you need to stop be so judgement caz that is how you seem to be. Do you have a heart? you don’t have to be so cold. If you don’t have something good to say then keep you opinions to yourself…who feels it knows it and I pray to God you don’t have to go through what the Murillo family experincing right now…Just make sure you “Macal” are always in your house by midnight bcaz remember you cannot serve two masters at the same time…you cannot serve “God” and “Time” at the same time:)
Bzean Gyal 2 d bone says, no one knows for sure what the man was doing out at that time of night, obviously it is his business. Sadly, his decision for being outside his house caused him his life, but we have to live our lives, right. This does not express any notion here that the victim was killed because he was out late at night, intoxicated, and doing illegal deeds.
I get the point which Macal was trying to make here; her poor choice of words did not execute her meaning well, while the moral fades from the story.
The crime rate is so high in Belize that more Belizeans should take more responsibility for themselves; even if the victim here in this post was innocent he still became the victim of crime. “What if the victim had gone to church like you assumed was the case and then went directly home, would he still be alive today”? (Be open to the bigger picture) crimes.
The police in Belize are no case solvers, many murders go unsolved. I suggest “neighborhood watch”, be inside your home at reasonable hours, stop hanging out late at night, or at street corners, do not tolerate friends nor family members using, selling drugs, or carrying guns, etc in your neighborhoods. If the people want a better way of live they should also help build better neighborhoods, by parents organizing “neighborhoods watch”.
Quoting you, If this was supposedly a robbery then why is it that he’s the only one who was targeted? This is a question the police are supposed to be following up, if he was a target, why? People are targets for reasons; I can list many reasons here, not enough time or cyberspace.
Quoting you again: “you need to stop be so judgement caz that is how you seem to be. Do you have a heart? you don’t have to be so cold. If you don’t have something good to say then keep you opinions to yourself”. After all, this is only your opinion and you should be respected for it, right?
With due respect to you, you are doing exactly the same thing to macal which irritated you so much. We can never judge the lives of others, because each person knows only their own pain and renunciation. It’s one thing to feel that you are on the right path, but it’s another to think that yours is the only path.”
“Freedom of speech” . Give respect and it will be given back to you…
Many of us who now reside outside the country are frustrated when we look at what our country has become. Last month within a four day period when 4 people were killed & more injured, the one thing that was hammered home to some from my generation who found themselves heading home to bury siblings &/or children, this level of violence cannot continue. There have always been abusive policemen on the force but they are not the majority & while they can up their game, we need to ask why the rest of the community continue to treat each murder as though they are isolated incidents. When did murder become the solution to every slight, every insult; real or imagined & what have we not gotten across to our children that have them place so little value on life, that they are willing to take a life over a “beef”. Teddy, Tyrone, Ronald, Chris, Faron & many others are gone & no longer have to live with the fear of sudden, unprovoked violence but how can a paralyzed 7 year old function in a world where nothing is designed for handicapped access & what emotional & mental toll has this taken on her grandfather & the other parents & grandparents in this community. “Yarborough(Yabra)” is not the problem & there is a false sense of security among some Belizeans that geography decreases their risk of being murdered or assaulted. If the Police are now killing our children, has it occurred to anyone that they may feel that this is the only weapon they have left in their arsenal? Not snitching is not making us safer & as long as we choose to turn a blind eye when others are victimized, we make ourselves more vulnerable. Good people are dying because we are myopic. When I was told 4 years ago that no one gets convicted of murder in Belize I thought “they” were lying. “They” were not. Does anyone remember what happened to the killers who murdered 3 young men, wounded 2 others on Mothers Day in 06? It was referred to as the Mothers Day Massacre. The Police did their job, sort of. While in prison, one of these murderers was allowed out on weekend furloughs with his prison guards, a second was spirited away to the US & the news withheld until he was off the plane in Miami, another walked because a witness got amnesia & at the last appearance, the officer who was supposed to testify was not notified. Was anyone punished?. The week after these murders, two sisters were killed in a way that probably left most of the adults & children who saw their bodies with nightmares. Fortunately this psycho was convicted but the mental & emotional toll that the violence is taking on Belize is killing our children. An 8% conviction rate for murder is shameful. Asking that we fix the system from the top down is a waste of time. Until the folks on top have to show up at the morgue to identify & claim their children, the excuses will continue. We cannot ask our children to become recluses, daylight is not a deterrent to the bloodshed. As adolescents & young adults in the 70s we walked home in the wee hours of the morning, the only thing we had to fear were the water mouth neighbours. What we had wasn’t Utopia but it was a long shot better than this & we owe it to this generation to clean this mess up. Someone mentioned Neighborhood Watch. A Neighborhood Resolution Council can provide the kind of forum we need to address disputes. Years ago, parents had enough sense to talk to each other, have the Council act as a go between when we are dealing with ignorant parents but this sitting on our hands isn’t working. That council can also be the 1st step to help the neighbours address grievances against officers, so that we do not have any one or two people playing God jr. & his disciples. By the way can anyone explain what the panel who investigated possible police misconduct actually did & was the spokesperson for that Panel retarded or talking to retards?
Born Belizean …..BETTER must come for our country indeed……………but WHO will bring it…….surely not the previous admin???? …….Perdomo is NOT corrupt………..is HONEST and NO MINISTAH ALONE can deal wid crime!!!!!!!!!!!!! No mattah who yu put there……………………..so please think like us “Sensible” belizeanssssssss………………….NO MINISTER is to blame……….CRIME IS A SOCIETY problem
Yea rite! yes crime is a society problem, but its also the Gov’t{UDP] to do more for the Belizean people ,BETTER to come for our country when? their is a saying “while the grass the grow the cow the dead” thats what is happening under the {UDP} Gov’t,there is too much nepotism going on,they are not organised and we the Belizean people will pay for that. I think they are not doing enough to fight crime, provide more employment, invest more in education{which they have cancelled sholarships thatz the way to move forward? NO – they promised better posibilities ,what posibilities? there’s NONE ! with the increase in TAXES it will get worst, there’s another saying” hungry people are angry people”. How longer do we have to wait? we the poor are more ! and the people have the power.
PERDOMO IS NOT CORRUPT? PLEASE – come on Belizean are no fools ,
Dean Barrow promised to end corruption, when will that be, he can’t even control his own ministers involved in corruption,so how will we move forward? all Belizeans are watching Mr.Prime Minister,u promised to lower electricity \water bills, better health for all, better education, more employment, more lands,{not take away},more scholarships{not take away}, lower the cost of living for all Belizeans no matter what ! more TAXES will not be the help, unemployment is extremely high ,and now we don’t feel safe in our own homes, the people are waiting.
Dat will be just as soon as he and obama make change lol
You sound like the only fool………….Belizeans are no fools indeed….please leave your political jargon for something else…not when it comes to crime……
The problem is not with Perdomo, the problem is with our system.
Yup Elgin….you are so right!!
This is not about politics, but even if we no want to mix politics its a pain that we have to- the ones that are out there feel the pinch, there’s a lot of unemployment, roberies are increasing ,asaults,Taxes, are increasing we no longer feel safe anymore. The gov’t promised more employment and rite now its hard to find one,the sugar industry in the north is going from bad to a worst scenario at this time, what will happen. All this combined is causing the increase in CRIME, even tourists are afraid to come to Belize , and I’m not blaming Mr.Perdomo, but its the reality its his Gov’t that is not capable to lead our country once more,Belize has been politicized now – if ur with them u can have an employment and if not u’re fired! why not give jobs to ALL people, like the PUP did, my brother-in-law had a job at one of the regional hospitals he was fired because he was hired by the PUP, and the worst he was a big UDP. UDP SYSTEM AGAIN.
The [UDP] was elected to serve the nation of Belize not only to afew, not to victimise,,the more they do-it the more people will turn against them. Thatz what they are doing they don’t think how to improve our country. It’ s sad but its the truth even thou it hurts.
it does not matter it seems who is in the goverment udp or pup we need to hold these party reponsibile if they cant stop this killing then they dont deserve our vote make them work for vote and stop sell your vote for two belize dollar it worth much much very very very verymore since people is jut winning by two vote 100 percent belizean lets save belize so we can come to retire peaful i remember as akid evanx use to say when use to seek sponsor for our football team they dont want to sponsor us they will use the money to pay arm guard to protect themself x you were right man love brother george
This message is to the general public as well as the senseless killers of Teddy Murillo. The reason i said “killers” is that because i learnt that there were 4 policemen in the red pickup truck that the police has, the red 1 with dark tints. Whatever i have to say is not fabricated in any way but was told to me by an old friend whom the same police man confided in. This CIB told this person everything, except why he did it. If its over a woman then this police bway is suffering from small man syndrome. Either the reason is way too stupid to kill sum1 for or he is hiding it.. The police said he just wanted to torchure him, but when he turned around to get back in the vehicle his officer in charge told him to finish him off because he knows ur name. So this makes it killers, to instruct to kill is just as bad as the killer, especially when ur killing innocent people. Through this trusted contact of mine i also learned the names of the officers that were present, i wanted to make mention of them but figured maybe my blog would not have bin posted up. Also the police mentioned he used an unliscensed fire arm “9 mm”, that he took off the streets sometime before. He even mentioned they wont find the gun because another police man is holding it for him. They had a key witness who saw but when she agreed to give a statement they brought back the same police she saw kill Teddy Murillo, which is a act of intimidation. She said she wanted to call the cops to help Teddy but she was so frightened and feared for her own life because she just saw police killing this young man. I wont even rant or rave about our justice system cuz its garbage n every1 knows dat already. This police even went as far as to threten family members.
To the killer: Rite now i see u riding around belize on bicycle like u won a trophy, but i know how scared u r. I know ur wearing a bullet proof vest even though ur on a months holiday. Ur commissioner told everyone that ur on a months suspension, the reason i said ur commissioner was because he made sure he protected u from jail time because u do all his dirty work that he doesnt have the guts to do for himself. But i bet he’s not by ur side 24/7 which makes u an easy target. U must be praying that sum 1 puts u out ur misery, I bet u havent had a sound nite sleep since u killed Teddy. U messed with the wrong people, those people are God’s people, they themselves i think are sorry for the eternal damnation u placed on urself ur little baby boy that u have not to mention ur entire family for generations. How would u feel if sum 1 killed ur son in his innocents or 1 of ur younger brothers or ur father?????????????????????????????
I am sooo angry about this whole thing that i just got the patience to do this blog. However i made sure i informed the family of all that i knew. Writing about it makes me more angry because so far nothing has been done. But have no fear my people “JUSTICE WILL B SERVED”.
His head doesn’t have a bullet prove vest around it.
wow the same story told over and over again by the people that saw what happen but fear for their lives to go to the police. They know going to the police is going to the murderer himself. The commissioner has the murder’s back, he wont let him go to jail no matter who he kills.
Street Justice is right….Justice will be served.
Justice will never be served at the hands of the court. The only way justice will be served is if someone kidnaps that police officer and butcher him in the most grotesque way imaginable
Maybe we need to kidnap Barrow the jakass and have him step up to the plate. He probobly don’t care because none of his family members have being affected by these henious crimes.
Although it shouldn’t be accepted we already know that justice delayed is justice denied. Thats the bottom line especially in belize. In case u didnt know it, the police force has its own internal gang, where officers are given the permission to kill certain people if found straying. U also have policemen who are attatched to different gangs in belize, so its like an exchange. The police carry out a murder for the gang n vice versa the gangs carry out hits for police. Fine example of this is a couple weeks ago when a young man was shot n killed by an off duty police at the corner of boulevard n fabers road, who claimed dat the boy had a gun. Well they had witnesses who saw everything n 1 young man ( mr.Matura) even gave a statement saying he saw the police throwing a gun beside the boys body. Matura was executed like 3 days after he gave that statement, not directly by police but it was a police staged hit.
The streets talk all the time. n from what im seeing and hearing it looks like corrupted policemen will soon be the ones filling the burial ground. Im not even sure if they will have space for them cuz theres a lot of crooked cops starting from the commissioner rite down. i just wish we could have posted some names. but what i plan to do is come up with a website where belizeans could freely express their minds as they have a rite to, and make their voices be heard.
I get real irritated when these uneducated policemen try to look down on people as if they are better than us. Anyway i hope the party(their demise) starts real soon for these corrupted dogs.
I agree with u steven. everything is just time bredda. Rememba me seh so.
The Belize government hire foreignors to be Judges and prosecutors, why not hire at least two outsiders to head the police force? Perhaps that would produce more decipline and create more confidence in the police force as these outsiders would have no ax to grind when it come to not wanting to push an issue because as locals we know each other directly or indirectly, and that make for a difficult job for unbiase policing. If the government really want to prove that they are up to the task of rendering quality law enforcement look into this, stupid as it may seem, suggestion.
Some time ago I had to visit the police station due to a hit and run accident, and I felt a shame when I heard the type of language that was used in the presense of a senior officer by a ordinary constable, which show the total break down in decipline in the police force. Policing is not an easy job especially in a small country such as ours. Be that as it may, even if the government put a cop on every street corner, those who are bent on commiting crime will commit crime. Only higher level of conciousness that refine our attitude will act as a brakes to the crminal mentality. We are daling with run away minds that is lacting in what really define a human being, therefore its useless to expect anything different that what we are experiencing on the streets of our country. Change the mental attitude and we are sure to change our society for the better.
i just found out about wat happened to teddy aka “broke shut”. I came on the net to find the news becuz i couldnt believe it n even seeing it i still cant believe it . he was not only my classmate but also a friend. He was friendly n always joking around. When i heard that they killed him I was shocked. I couldnt believe it.. The f*** police who did this shud be putt away for life or like steven said , he should be kidnapped and butcher in the most grotesque way imaginable.. And i know becuz he is the damn police they wont be him anything.. he can make up any damn lie about teddy. this is the same damn reason i hate police men. …. mein he was a student, a friend, a son he was my friend. just to say realnice…i am an SDA like Teddy and I personally knew Teddy. 1st of all theres nothing in our belief that says you can’t go out any night, and 2nd of all Teddy was out when what we consider our SABBATH was over…I don’t know why so many people writting that the boy was not suppose to be out that night…get your facts straight before you write things you really don’t know anything about…
Based on the overwhelming evidence we see on the news every single day: corruption of all areas of government, the extreme crime and senseless killing, the poverty … it seems Belize has become just another corrupt banana republic in Latin America.
If this crime situation keeps up….. NO ONE WILL WANT TO COME TO BELIZE!!!!!
Not even Belizeans for vacation.
INTERNET WRITING SHOULD BE LIMITED TO 4 or 5 LINES PER PARAGRAPH. Anything more becomes discouraging to read. Use more paragraphs, maybe one per thought??? Keep writing.
belizemyhome said to realnice ,”get your facts straight before you write things you really don’t know anything about…”
(1) Teddy was killed on Friday nite:
(2) Sabbath is from sunset to sunset meaning ” sunset on Friday to sunset on Saturday ”
and its not our Sabbath its Gods
Exodus 20: 10 But the seventh day is the Sabbath of the LORD thy God:
belizemyhome: please educated people on God , I no that’s what u learn from the Bible, only God will judge Teddy no one else.
realnice: satan kills people,God doesn’t kill people he allows it to happen, and when u died u go to the grave, not heaven or hell , Christ said he is bringing our reward with him what kinda sense it would make for a person to go to heaven and when Christ comes he will still have to come back to this sinful world to hear Christ say welcome good and faithful servant. here’s your crown of life…….
hey that’s true, i practically scrolled down on all the long comments..read Elgin’s..short 🙂
Dont let da religion thing justify why this young man was murdered wrongfully. it doesnt matter what religion u r if u r murdered then justice needs to prevail. Maybe if Barrow see his son lyin in a coffin he will tighten up the police force. Jefferies said he sent the cib who murdered this young man to work in Punta Gorda, thats a lie, this police still lives in front of the Murillo’s family home. Me personally cant wait to see these dogs dead.
Justice will be served!!!!!!!!!! Time is everyhting…..when u touch a child of God….u better kno the consequences u be put through,……How Can a police……who should be a protector of the land…..Go about killing…..innocent young blood…..THis system is a dame joke……MAcal…to be frank……u sound like an innocent A…hole…..n i hope ur not one of those who hae d police back….who killed Innocent Teddy….b/c ur just as guity as that police…!!! But belizean must stand up!!!!!!!!!!!! we need to get a change…………everythingis messed up…..AS we say same …. different day…………yes…i nuh guve ahhh … about politics….B/c i kno young Teddy was innocent….n had a bright future….but because of some senseless, immature, rebellious, killer police…he is gone… But THAT POILCE WILL PAY…I DONT WANT NO ONE TO KILL HIEM…I WANT HIM TO SUFFER…..N I’M RLLLY SORRY FOR HIS GENERATION….BECASUE…..THEY WILL BE CURSE BECAUSE OF HIS WRONG DOING…WHAT POSSED A MAN…..TO DO SUCH A THING…..MAY GOD DEAL WITH HIS SOUL,,,,,,!!!!!!!!!! R.I.IP T.MURIILO
