Commission of Inquiry recommends pay back of K.H.M.H. slip-ups
On Thursday night we gave you a peak into the findings of the Commission of Inquiry that was tasked to investigate shady purchasing practices at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital from January first 2007 to July thirtieth 2009. The inquiry was ordered after the Belize Medical and Dental Union blew the whistle on the irregularities. The report of the commission sites numerous instances where things went awry at the K.H.M.H. One such case that really hurt the K.H.M.H. coffers was the purchase of sixteen thousand dollars worth of Isovue, which turned out to be the wrong type of contrast. The stock was not returned by the required date and C.E.O. Dr. Gary Longsworth was aware of the erroneous purchase. For this, the commission recommends that he repay a large portion of that cost.
Still on financial losses, Tiffarah Anderson, a former cashier at the hospital was said to have stolen over twenty-eight thousand dollars from the K.H.M.H. When the theft was discovered Anderson signed a promissory note to pay five hundred dollars each month until the debt was covered, but only seven payments were made, leaving over twenty-four thousand dollars outstanding. The commission’s problem with that arrangement was that no report was ever made to the police or the DPP’s office. Former CEO, Dr. Alvaro Rosado clarified that the matter was in fact reported to police but was not pursued after they were advised by an attorney to take the route of the promissory note. The commission, however, recommends that Anderson now be taken to court.
Dr. Rosado and former director of financial services, Cecil Knowles may also have to cough up some big bucks. That’s because the hospital spent one hundred and eleven thousand, six hundred and sixty-five dollars of a million dollars grant from Venezuelan on items outside of the conditions of the donation. Both Knowles and Rosado denied that the items, purchased from Best Medical Supplies in 2007, were paid for with the Venezuelan funds, but the commission was not convinced and recommends that they both repay a portion of that money.
The hospital also lost another twenty-eight thousand, six hundred plus dollars for equipment called chiller parts which were auctioned by the Port of Belize because they were not cleared in time. The Director of Finance, Carlos Perrera is being held responsible and recommended to pay a portion of that loss.
pay a portion u must be crazy. These people have stolen and misapporpiated funds and you want them to pay a portion. How about 100% portion. The commsssion of inquiry is a joke. A blatant joke and this is a slap to the Belizean people with the tag- Do as i please. barrow you are a joke a blantant joke. that what u are.
thatz ! rite it will just disappear like all the other inquiries, they should make Dr.Fabro from Orange Walk pay a portion of it too he aslo is responsible-, for that corruption scandal that broke out from KHMH…AND WITH DEAN BARROW HE IS A J@7@ss,he knew what was going on but was making a fool of himself,as well as all the scandal from city hall about ‘MAYOR ZENAIDA MOYA” SHE HAS STOLEN SO MUCH MONEY, with that- so many projects could have been done in the city,or at least keep the city clean…we all heard in the news the last time when “ZENAIDA MOYA ” said that someone doesn’t have BALLS” ,I believe she was refering to the ‘Honourable Prime Minister Dean Barrow”…..I’m so disappointed the way mr barrow is leading our country its worst than the PUP in 10 years…at least there were jobs,we recieved sml parcels of land{now that the UDP Gov’t took away] if the PUP can find land and distribute to its people then why can’t the UDP do the same? but they are only intrested in themselves, they are #1 in VICTIMISATION, “.Mr barrow promised to lower the cost of living for ALL Belizeans no matter what ,when will that come? he has risen the killa vat [gst] so high that Belizeans cannot aford to buy much now….maybe with thay money if they get it bak from dr.ROSADO,DR. FABRO,and many others they can do someting good out of it maybe invest it in the police dept’ to fight crime.
I agree with you Melvin Ian. I used to be a PUP years ago, but then voted for UDP because I was frustrated. But WOW… It’s not even the thieving that is my major problem with the UDP. It is their complete disregard for the Belizean people. They do WHATEVER they want. The UDP is full of idiots and THUGS. The politicians are directly connected to several criminals! It is a well known fact! That is one problem we did not have under the PUP administration. The PUP took money from the Belizean people, but the UDP is doing that AND they are affiliated with those who are shooting on the streets of Belize City due to drugs. I don’t know what I will do next election time. Vote for the lesser of two evils?
