Health training session targets operational management

Story PictureIt is not big news but good for the health system and local health managers concluded a health workshop today which engaged them in a three day training session. The first module held in August was to share planning tools with regional managers. The second module which was held this week at the George Price Center in Belmopan, was engineered to improve operational management. According to Doctor Alfonso Young of the Ministry of Health’s Policy and Planning Unit, they have been working to be efficient at both local and regional levels.

Dr. Alfonso Young, Policy & Analysis Planning Unit, Min. of Health
“The first one had to deal with the planning and giving tools to the regional health management team, each one of four regions of the country distributed. But they were developing the needs and they were practicing with tools to do planning; operational planning at the local level and also to do the strategic planning for the regions; for the north regions, southern region, central region and the western region. Each one of the regions have a health management team which is composed of the manager of the region, the deputy and there is the chief of the staff and there is the principal nurse of that region or the matron or the sister and also we have health educator and the public health inspector and the public health nurse. All of them can form the team that leads, manages and directs the delivery of services in each region for the population. So this workshop is intended to equip to do better management of the services, to do better planning for the delivery of the services and also to do better management of human resources.”

Doctor Young says there are three components that are necessary to properly improve health services. One is planning, the second is operational management and the third is human resources.
