Both Foreign Ministers say that Belize/Guatemala issue to head to ICJ

The two Foreign Ministers also addressed the issue of the Belize/Guatemala claim. Both concurred that the matter will be heading to the International Court of Justice.

Wilfred “Sedi” Elrington

“Both our governments, whether it’s P.U.P. or U.D.P., both are committed to go to the ICJ and both are committed to educating and inform our people leading up to that process so that the chancier came and we have discussed that as well and we have agreed on the way forward. So  right after election, whichever party wins, the chancier is prepared to come back so that we can get right into discussions on how we’re gonna finance this education campaign, when more or less we are going to be able to go to referendum and the like.”

Harold Caballeros

“We want a closer relationship, as the minister said; we want to leave this conflict behind us to look for a better future for our people. We expect to have developments; we expect to have commercial exchange, investment, direct investment in both countries. But in order to have that, we need to leave the conflict behind and that is what we really want.”

The dispute has been put on the back burner because of elections in both countries, but it is likely to move up once elections have been completed in Belize.
