Viva Mexico! Neighbors to finish Border Bridge

A new bridge at the Belize/Mexico border has been in works for years and in the next couple of months, it is expected to finally open. Work began on the bridge in 2007, and while Mexico finished the construction on that side of the border in 2009, Belize has not been able to uphold its end of the bargain. But according to Mexico’s Enfoque Radio, the Quintana Roo Ministry of Communications and Transport has decided to pick up the slack and will invest four million dollars to complete the infrastructure at the border. It has not been reported in Belize, but according to the radio reports, at the seventh meeting of the Mexico-Belize Bi-national Commission held at the end of August, the Mexican government agreed to build the access road to the new crossing and the border perimeter fence as well as to put proper lighting in the area. It will also be providing all labor and materials. Work is expected to begin this week and Mexican officials say the bridge should be opened at the end of November. The project was started under the presidency of Felipe Calderon and the Mexicans want its conclusion before he demits office.

  2. Lucas says:

The UDP govt. always extending the hand; not to say: What can I do for you? BUT, WHAT CAN YOU DO FOR ME?. it reminds me of the child, in the 1950s, that would stand by the swing bridge and with extended hand would ask: MISTA, MISTA SHILLING(25 CENTS) FOR A BUN. PLEASE. PLEASE. The true state of the nation is that it is a BEGGER STATE. These guys are not normal indeed.

  3. Truthbetold says:

Sad, we have become a nation of beggars, liars and thieves. If all the money we had borrowed hadn’t been squandered and misappropriated we might have decent roads, services and a bustling economy. Much that we talk big and think we are something, we are no better than other third world African countries. Banana Republic comes to mind.

  4. mustard stand says:

does Belize ever completes any of its contracts?. Where does all the money go? Now, Belize will owe Mexico lots of money, this is sure not a “gift”.

  5. Hatari says:

Happy Independence Day! Gimme a Dalla!

  6. me says:

i wonder why the still , even the news call our ministers “honorable”. None of all the ministers fit that word. All of them are thiefs nothing less.

  8. OWtoBoston says:

Truly disappointing for Belize. We can’t even meet people halfway. Can we get leaders who actually know how to lead? However, I am happy that Mexico is being a good friend.

  9. Eye in the Sky says:

I hear the Mexicans say that the whole Free Zone area actually belongs to Mexico and they are only leasing the land to Belize.
So the Free Zone and all the land up to the Border is actually Mexico.
That is why they will build a bridge in their country and not Belize as you think.
This land was sold to the Mexicans many many years ago.

  10. jose says:

so why are we not surprised that our Belize Goverment was stalling for this to happen?????
    Shame…Shame..Shame

  11. Belizean Pride says:

it’s a shame that our neighbor Mexico has to finish build our half of the bridge so we can cross on the other side. it’s really shameful because these things are international issues that links the way a country relates to another but imagine they having to built it for us so we can cross the Mexican side, damn!!!! I’m a proud Belizeans but this really sucks to hear that our leaders can’t even finish local jobs worst a international projects that links his neighboring country.

  12. BMNJ says:

Belize is known for getting hands out from Taiwan, Venezuela, USA, Mexico, England, etc. Independence means self reliance and sustenance. Wonder if we’re really and truly ready for independence.

  13. Eye in the Sky says:

The Mexicans built the whole bridge already. Belize can not even build a dirt road leading up to the Mexican bridge in the Mexican Free Zone.

Mexico should claim the northern half of Belize and Guatemala the southern half.

We would be 100% better off.
