Belize stays on U.S. list of narco trafficking route

Soon after an alleged Hezbollah terrorist secured Belizean documents in a matter of days, there is more bad news for Belize. The country has once again been placed on the United States’ black list of twenty-two countries that are considered a part of the transnational drug trade. The list, issued by President Barrack Obama on Independence Day last week, puts Belize along with Afghanistan, The Bahamas, Bolivia, Burma, Colombia, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, India, Jamaica, Laos, Mexico, Nicaragua, Pakistan, Panama, Peru, and Venezuela as major drug transit and/or illicit drug producing countries. In the memorandum, President Obama notes that while being on the list may not be because of a lack of counternarcotics efforts by the government, he says that one of the reasons is, “the combination of geographic, commercial, and economic factors that allow drugs to transit or be produced, even if a government has carried out stringent narcotics control law enforcement measures.” The Caribbean region and Central America—both of which include Belize—are considered transit zones for illegal substances destined for US markets. It is estimated that approximately five percent of all drugs destined for the United States pass through The Bahamas, Dominican Republic, Haiti, and Jamaica while about ninety-five percent of illegal drugs cultivated and produced in South America destined for the US are smuggled through Central America, Mexico, and the Eastern Pacific, primarily by boats and illegal air flights.

It doesn’t help when GOB rolls over or closes its eyes for whatever cartel wants to move planeloads or container loads through the Jewel, and leave some of the cays wide open for traffickers.

It’s a disgrace to all Belizeans.

We need a hard-core unit like GSU to go after the high-level traffickers and their partners in government.

  2. MADDYVANDIJKDEREALISTO says:

Like everything else in Belize the GOB do very little to remedy the problems. Things would have to be real confrontational for the GOB to actually get off their @$$#$ and do something about it.

The message we have sent internationally of the future is clear: Do whatever you want; we will do nothing to stop you. Just ask organization Hezbollah, and the Columbians drug sectors.

Yet we sit back and allow the GOB to keep right on pillaging our laws, our money, and our collective sense of decency right into the ground.

  3. O.Walk observer says:

Why doesn’t the U.S. publish the list of illicit drug consumers??? They are number one; from the early 1950’s at first just with alcohol ( prohibition ) then into the sixties with heroin, LSD ; 1970’s with cocaine, martiguana, crystal METH the U.S has been the number one consumer. What is being done to curb that bad habit or urge??? Belize does not and cannot produce cocaine, just by our geographical location some of that trade spills over into Belize, but we are not to blame; NO DEMAND = NO PRODUCTION. Once the US is able to control its unsatiable urge for illicit drugs, then tha producers have to lower or cease production.

  4. roska says:

Why do we punish more the traffickers that are getting the drug out of Belize… AND TO THE US??? rather tha punish the drug pushers at home that are poisoning our youths and communities???? DO WE NEED TO PLEASE UNCLE SAM MORE THAN PROTECT OUR PEOPLE??

IS THE LIFE OF AMERICANS WORTH MORE THAN THAT OF BELIZEANS????

Of course their is the issue of traffickers now being paid in drugs (that they need to sell here in Belize) rather than in cash like in the 80’s….!!
