Mexican President visits bridge to Belize

Felipe Calderon

Mexican President, Felipe Calderon, visited the Belize/Mexico border this afternoon as he winds down his five year presidency. Calderon demits office on December first and today he inspected the facilities at the international bridge where he was met by Deputy Prime Minister, Gaspar Vega, Minister Pablo Marin and a host of other high level government officials. Calderon commissioned the new facilities, which he says will be put to use very soon. According to Calderon, “I am happy that this is officially ready and we hope that we can soon begin to take full advantage of the benefits of this international bridge, which will increase and improve trade between Belize and Mexico and other Latin American countries.” The bridge has been ready since 2009, but has not been opened because a stretch of eight hundred meters of road was not built by the Belize government as was agreed to. And on Tuesday, the President asked the Mexican Senate to use unarmed military personnel to construct the road.

I can’t imagine why GOB could not meet its promise to complete a mere half mile of road in 5 years, but it has other unmet promises as well. Anyway, thanks to Pres. Calderon and his nation. Every little bit helps.

  2. BMNJ says:

Why couldn’t we use our unarmed military personnel to assist in the road construction as well?

  3. Eye in the Sky says:

The free zone belongs to Mexico anyway.

Belize sold the land to the Mexicans long ago ans is only leasing the land from the Mexicans.
