Second bee sting victim is suffering liver damage

A five year old boy remains hospitalized at the Northern Medico Plaza in Orange Walk following an attack by killer bees. On Monday, Pedro Thiessen and his four year old sibling, Enrique were playing behind their house in the Little Belize Community in southern Corozal when they were stung repeatedly by the swarm of killer bees. Unfortunately, Enrique did not make it and died within minutes of the attack…but little Pedro reached the hospital in time. He was stung to all parts of the body and remains in a critical condition. The required seventy-two hours of observation have passed and today, News Five spoke with Pediatrician, Doctor Marco Tulio Mendez. Doctor Mendez says that the venom from the bees have affected Pedro’s liver.

“Pedro Thiessen has improved. I can see that he is tolerating now. He is eating, drinking, nevertheless when we did the blood test today, the liver function tests were a little bit higher; or let’s say that it shows that the inflammation had deteriorated within his liver. But that was the only blood test that didn’t improve. All the other test improve. As I said, I did expected that this could present itself; that’s why we are taking that precaution of having him at least two to three days more within the hospital.”

“Well the liver itself, those are the regenerator; they grow very fast. So I expect that they will start to decrease because this is the maximum peak that I am assuming that the liver could be swollen. So I am expecting that afterwards, the liver will get better. But thanks god that only that organ is affecting. The kidneys are functioning adequately and all the rest. Due to the fact that the liver function test are abnormal is the reason he is not eating too good, but he is tolerating some fluids right now and fruits that we are providing to him. The adults are doing quite find and thanks to Doctor Baldomino Barbosa that really gave good care for those persons during their admission and they have already been discharged.”

The body of Pedro’s four year old brother, Enrique, was laid to rest this afternoon in Little Belize.
