COLA blasts K.H.M.H. and ministry for infant deaths

Geovanni Brackett

There is indignation over the deaths of the babies in the neonatal intensive care unit, and the public is calling for an independent investigation.  One local non-governmental organization today did not vacillate in its outrage.    Citizens Organized for Liberty Through Action’s president Geovanni Brackett sent out a fiery press release saying, “Minister, Doctors, Director, C.E.O. and staff, do not have the combined testicular fortitude to address this issue, and do so in a professional and timely manner, then you are not worth your salt, and you must go.” News Five spoke to the firebrand president who also spoke of cases that appear to have been unsatisfactorily resolved.

Geovanni Brackett, President of COLA

“Twelve premature deaths within twenty days goes beyond words of expression. You can’t say it is outrageous; it is beyond condemnation and it is a failure definitely on the part of the hospital. It is a failure under the leadership in the Ministry of Health. It is a sign in our view that there is a collapse in our health system. We at COLA are more than outraged about this incident and our condolences go out to these families. And since this, COLA has been contacted by many people. Some…you know this will bring out other folks, other parents that have had premature deaths. You can’t say connect those with these, but this is bringing out a lot of issues. We want to remind the Minister of Health, Pablo Marin, that on his watch, there was alleged corruption at the hospital, K.H.M.H., which was never satisfactorily resolved. We remind that Director of Health Services, Doctor Michael Pitts, of Zenaida Reymundo and Andy Jones of Toledo and the babies of Orange Walk that did not get a chance to live. And we remind the C.E.O., Dr. Peter Allen and C.E.O., Dr. Gary Longsworth of their first oaths of their profession, to do no harm. Listening to the press conference yesterday, all they can sum it up into we blame the bacteria. There is no one on the record to say we take full responsibility of what has happened. To know that as early as February a first child was dead prematurely as a result of this bacteria and then have a second and a third and not send off alarm bells. It shows that there is something wrong with the management and the board of directors must be held responsible for this. The Minister of Health must take responsibility for what is going on in the health system. And in our view this is beyond outrageous and heads must roll for this.”

The K.H.M.H. told the media on Wednesday that it should have a report on Tuesday.

I agree with Cola. Lock stock and barrel should resign. This has been going on for years. At the San Ignacio hospital 5 years ago; the stupid nurses scold and told my sister in law nothing was wrong with her one month old baby. The next morning at 4:00 a.m. the baby died from Pneumonia. MURDERERES, THATS WHAT ALL OF YOU ARE!

Giovanni, you have the bully pulpit to lead on important national issues like this, but you need to do more than issue press releases.

Follow the example of Dr. Martin Luther King and organize marches, sit-ins, boycotts and other forms of civil disobedience that have been proved around the world to be able to bring bad governments to their knees.

There’s incredible power in the truth and moral right, but you have to let that genie out of its bottle. If COLA won’t do it, maybe some other group can grasp that vision and start to change the Jewel.

Cudos to you Mr. Brackett. But KHMH needs a complete staff make over. They are also responsible for neglectful treatment to adults, resulting in death. Please stay on them. This needs to be exposed fully. My heart goes out to the parents of those newborn babies. It seems as if too many non caring people are employed as doctors and nurses. So many, they make the FEW good ones almost invisible!!! An investigation on a much broader scale should be done immediately. Too, too many people, young and old continue to die at the KHMH, due to poor treatment!!!! I can tell you my own story, that ended with the death of my dear brother, one year and a half ago, at the KHMH DUE TO NEGLECT FROM THEIR MEDICAL STAFF. Please stay on top of this bad situation. It needs to be addressed, until positive changes in the administration and medical are made!!!

Suing a couple of them for all they own, I bet you then and only will the message get across loud and clear to the others.
