Chair of K.H.M.H. board says C.E.O. should have known

Chandra Nisbet-Cansino

The Director of Medical Services says the investigation is ongoing…but it is still not known where the hospital-acquired bacteria, enterobacter cloacae came from. The first case of an infant infected by the bacteria was in February, but that infant survived and went home with the mother. The investigative team, which includes doctors from the K.H.M.H. Quality Assurance and Infection Control Unit, members from The Pan American Health Organization and the Ministry of Health, have pointed out that the first death occurred on May tenth. More persons are being interviewed regarding the timing and who knew of the thirteen deaths. Chairlady of the Board of Governors said that it is unfortunate that the C.E.O. of the K.H.M.H., Francis Gary Longsworth, was not aware of the deaths when it occurred.

“Measures taken to address the situation were taken timely with the interests of the patients first.  At this time, so far we cannot hold any one person accountable. We have had detailed discussions with head of pediatric unit and their response was really timely. They did what they were supposed to do when they were supposed to do it. I think that as Dr. Coye explained, he was aware of what was going on; unfortunately the C.E.O. had not. We would have liked that the C.E.O. knew about these events as they were unfolding. And so we as a board will have a conversation with him probably to strengthen that area. As a board as well, if there is a crisis in the hospital we also feel that we should know. We definitively will have answer, but our first concern was to ensure that the situation was that the situation was handled correctly and that there was no negligence on the part of the medical professions. The families are still coming in I think we had only spoken with about four families so far. We actually had some families that were coming in today, but we rescheduled their visit up to press conference. I’m not sure exactly what compensation because it was basically a brief admission and discharge. And the only thing they would be given is a hospital bill.”

Yeah- would you be singing the same song and using those exact words if it would have been your first-born that this happened to?

Just shows what callous people we have working in the ministry of health. At least she could have expressed a sentiment but shows just what we all know all along- they have no feelings, do not care for the patients as individuals..it is just another death to them plain and simple…

Only in Belize- she would never get away with those remarks in the US- she would have been torn apart by the press right there and then..

When you are in charge of a life-and-death responsibility, like running a hospital, you have to be tougher than Nisbet-Cansino sounds. The negligent parties MUST be identified, and their heads must roll.

The CEO is the person entrusted to manage the day-to-day operation of the hospital, and apparently Longsworth failed to do that competently. The Board morally cannot just sweep the dead babies under the carpet and continue business as usual. If Longsworth failed, there are no excuses, and there should be no “second chances.” How many dead babies on his watch will be too many for the Board? If there are any more, their blood will be on the Board members’ hands.

  5. Baby Mother says:

A HOSPITAL BILL????!!! SHAME ON YOU!!!

  6. Charl says:

If you cannot hold any one accountable then hold everyone accountable, because really this is gross negligence by the entire staff and Board of Governors to let this atrocities happen in a place you go and seek health care not to be kill.

  7. Charl says:

Hospitals are to heal the sick not for euthanasia,so everyone at KHMH is to be blame for the cruelty that was done to these helpless babies.
