Injured Cyclist remains in critical, but stable condition at the K.H.M.H.

Geon Hanson

Twenty-two-year-old Geon Hanson, a well-known Belizean cyclist, remains in stable condition, following a near-fatal road traffic accident on Christmas Eve.  The young rider was training for the upcoming New Year’s Day Cycling Classic along the George Price Highway on Tuesday morning when he was hit by a commuter bus.  As a result, Hanson sustained severe internal injuries and has undergone a total of three surgeries.  News Five spoke with Steven Bisset, a relative of the injured athlete.

Steven Bisset, Uncle of Geon Hanson

“Geon was doing a training ride early on Tuesday morning, preparing for the January 1st Krem Classic when he was unfortunately hit by a bus from the rear.  Geon had three surgeries done on Tuesday.  One was done in Belmopan where they removed his spleen and he was stabilized in Belmopan and then transferred to the Karl Heusner Memorial [Hospital] where they did some more surgeries to stop internal bleeding where they found he had a little rupture of his intestine.  He had a punctured lung, five broken ribs and a bruised kidney.  Gratefully and thankfully he was able to be stabilized and he was sedated, as a matter of fact he is still sedated as we speak and he is showing, his vitals are very strong and stable and we’re hopeful that everything will work out.  As we speak, he is doing some CAT scans to see if there were any other further injury of his spine or anything of that sort because at first all we were, the doctors were concerned about getting him stabilized.  So we are waiting for those results and hopefully we’ll have those by the end of the day today and we are praying that those will be very positive and that’s where we are right now.”

“Do you know if a notice of intended prosecution has been filed against the driver of the bus that knocked him down?”

Steven Bisset

“To our knowledge, yes, a notice has been given and to be honest with you the family, we haven’t looked at that side at all.  We’re all just praying and doing whatever we can to help whichever way we can with Geon.  His health is the most important thing to us and that’s where we are focusing all our energies at this time.”
