UWI terminates Doctor Brendan Bain’s contract as Head of CHART

As we reported on Monday’s newscast, Professor Brendan Bain of the University of West Indies had come under fire for appearing as an expert witness in the case in which Caleb Orozco and UNIBAM are challenging the section fifty-three of the criminal code before the Belize Supreme Court. Well, the news tonight is that the UWI has terminated Bain’s contract as the director of the Caribbean HIV/AIDS Regional Training (CHART) Network. The university issued a statement this afternoon confirming that it was cutting ties with Bain because the professor no longer enjoyed the confidence and support of a significant sector of the community. There was significant pressure from advocacy groups that wrote to the UWI vice-chancellor, E. Nigel Harris after Bain testified in the UNIBAM case. The UWI said today that while Bain has a right to provide expert testimony, it was in conflict with his position at CHART.
