Occupy Belmopan – organization determined to stand strong

Patrick Menzies

On June seventeenth, the organization called the Alliance of Ministers and Leaders of Belize took to the steps of the National Assembly in an initiative called Occupy Belmopan. Since then the pastors and members of mainly Hispanic-based evangelical churches have been a constant presence on Independence Hill. Belize Can President Patrick Menzies is spearheading the movement and told us that even now, they are determined to stand strong until their demands are met.

Patrick Menzies, President, Belize Can

“We’re trying to invite Belizeans to come out and join us. But what we are doing is that on Sundays, Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays we’re passing out flyers to invite people and explain to them what we’re doing. On Tuesday and Thursday and Saturdays we’re having services all day so we can’t talk to people. They only see us out there having a church service and teaching stuff on the Constitution. So we’re trying to invite Belizeans. And by the way, for all those who work for government that are so scared to talk to me on the steps of the National Assembly…I still love you folks. People are scared in this country. Why are Belizeans so scared? When citizens are afraid of government it’s called tyranny. When government is afraid of citizens it’s called democracy. We are a nation with a dictator and tyranny. I am not just talking about Dean Barrow. I’m not blaming the red. They’re the same. So the movement is this. We’re here Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday having services and teaching and preaching and praising God. And on Monday and Sunday…every other day we’re there passing out flyers. And it’s been working. We have a lot of people, English speaking and other people coming out there now and saying you know what, we didn’t know what you guys were doing so thank you very much. So it’s working. It’s the education process. Education is power. We’re empowering the nation.”

“How long do you plan to maintain?”

Patrick Menzies

“My brother, I said we’d maintain until this stuff backs off, and that’s what we plan on doing.”

The alliance is demanding that government immediately withdraw, and not only revise, the gender policy document.

  1. As I see it says:

It is interesting that when members of the police force speaks and specifically this officer, why do they release information to the criminals about hunting them down? You do not tell them what you are doing to crack down, it is absolute stupidity. Its like telling the late Bin Laden, I know you are in the cave and we will reach out and pluck you outta there. He was saying the other day that police presence will be visible on the walkways in Belmopan. For goodness sake, common sense dictates that you do not do that, you just do what you have to do. Where are these guys trained, and are they taught what is classified information, what and how they should speak and what should be released? Damn wake up Policemen some of your comments are very very pathetic well no even ask about the English, my goodness it is atrocious. For those who are of Mayan or Spanish decent in the police force should be taught proper English or get off the TV………. one day a cop said the diseased person in his report of a crime instead of deceased. Can you imagine? makes me wonder about their use of the English language when writing and documenting information from the public,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,mien, mien, mien. Sad situation wish I can work with the Cops and edit their reports before they go on the air and help them to be more professional, they need a person to vet a mean seriously vet what they are going to say before they get on the TV, some of them truly make a mockery of themselves………….I will not rest my case…………nough said, with due respect to the Police.
