Cayo teen appealing for medicine to cure rare illness
A student from the Cayo District is bedridden tonight, having been diagnosed with a rare illness. Rosendo Choc and his family are reeling from the prognosis tonight that without the necessary medication, his chances of surviving Guillain Barre Syndrome are slim. And even though the medicine he needs is thousands of dollars out of their reach, the Chocs are clinging to the hope that Christmas miracles still do happen.

Last week Monday, thirteen year old Rosendo Choc suddenly fell ill. Doctors have since diagnosed him with Guillain Barre Syndrome, which attacks the spinal cord, nerves and causes temporary paralysis. If left untreated patients can die. Tonight Choc remains in a critical condition at the Karl Heusner Memorial. He is unable to walk and is in terrific pain. Mathilda Choc says since her son was diagnosed she has been trying to get the financial assistance needed to save his life. Choc, who is a single mother of ten children, says it?s difficult to helplessly watch her son.

?The matron said that he told him that he had pains in his leg and that he feel weak. They ker ah to Belmopan hospital and run some test, then Tuesday morning they rush him back because he could not stand up at all, he couldn?t get up then they admit him and they transferred him right here to the K.H.M.H.?
A number of appeals have resulted in some financial donations; however, the total treatment will cost an estimated twenty-five thousand dollars as the medication, Gamma Globulin, is not available in the country. On Sunday the K.H.M.H. did manage to secure several vials of the liquid medicine and immediately started administering it to their young patient. Choc is appealing to the general public to help them meet the costs for the medication her son desperately needs.
