Woman Charged for ‘Hit’ on Common-Law-Husband…
Tonight there are allegations that a woman living in Belize City aided in a murder attempt on her common-law-husband. Twenty-nine year old Indira Mejia, originally from Orange Walk, was this morning charged with abetment to murder in the court of Chief Magistrate Anne Marie Smith. Police believe that Mejia aided two men, twenty-year old Ignatius Williams and one other person, to gun down fisherman Brian Claire on Wednesday, August sixth. Claire was on Partridge Street when he was approached by the two gunmen. They allegedly fired at him and hit him on the right arm. Claire returned fire with his licensed firearm and the two men fled. According to Sergeant Roberto Novelo, Police believe that Mejia arranged a hit on her common-law-husband.

“Our investigations reveal that Miss Indira Mejia planned to kill her common-law-husband. It appears that Miss Mejia wants to get rid of her common-law-husband for his property.”

“Sir, have you been able to establish that exactly because when we had spoken with her, she had said that there was already some documentation to show that all that would be left if anything happened to him, in the hands of his children, his other relatives but not her.”
Sgt. Roberto Novelo
“Not necessarily. Based on our investigations so far, that is what the investigation reveals. She is the one who lured Mister Brian Clare to that location where he was shot.”
This morning the charge of abetment to murder was read to Mejia and she was granted bail of two thousand dollars over the objections of the prosecutor. She is to surrender all her travel documents, stay away from Claire and report to the Police Station weekly. Ignatius Williams was charged with four indictable offences – attempted murder, wounding, use of deadly means of harm and grievous harm with a firearm. He was denied bail and remanded to the Belize Central Prison. Both he and Mejia are to reappear in court on September twelfth. Police continue to seek one other person who they say was along with Williams when the attempt on Claire’s life was made.
