Foreign Minister Elrington Says Murder is not a Foreign Affairs Matter
The brazen midday execution of Special Constable Conorquie at the Caracol Archaeological Site on Thursday, by persons believed to be Guatemalan nationals, has caused public outrage. And as you heard earlier in the newscast, there are significant differences in the interview from the San Ignacio police and the sanitized information released on Thursday. Still, the general feeling is that the perpetuators are indeed xateros operating in Belize illegally. But, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Wilfred Elrington, maintains that the issue is of a domestic nature. Elrington says that only if and when it has been confirmed that the suspects are poachers from neighboring Guatemala will the Foreign Ministry step in to protest the matter with its counterparts.
Wilfred ‘Sedi’ Elrington, Minister of Foreign Affairs
“I was briefed on that incident yesterday evening by Colonel Lovell, who is the C.E.O. in the Ministry of National Security. As far as I understand it, it is a national security matter. The sad shooting of Mr. Conorquie, I was told, was allegedly done by two persons of Hispanic extraction who were apparently on horses and who disappeared into the bush. The identity of the persons has not been ascertained and neither their nationality, we really don’t know. It occurred well within the borders of Belize so that it is essentially a domestic matter. It has nothing to do with Foreign Affairs at this time, as far as we know. Whenever these things occur it causes strain on the relationship, you know. In this time it would certainly cause strain because the Belizean government would be very, very serious in dealing with it. It’s something that we never wished to happen, we don’t want to happen, we don’t want to encourage it to happen and we would certainly protest the matter very strongly with our Guatemalan counterparts. We would certainly notify them on the incident by diplomatic note and what normally happens thereafter is a sort of attempt between the foreign minister and then the presidents to see how we could calm the waters. Neither of us is of the view that it is profitable to inflame our populations and so every effort is taken to try to mitigate the damage and contain the damage that is done by these unfortunate incidents.”
Elrington you are a total disgrace to this country a traitor and a coward you should be locked up immediately along with this no good impotent pm and gov. I say mine the whole border then if these Guatemalans get blown up its their own problem.
Mr. Sedi,
YOU GOT TO MAKE UP YOUR MIND-ON ONE HAND YOU SAY THIS INCIDENT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH FOREIGN AFFAIRS AND ON THE OTHER HAND YOU SAY THAT YOUR MINISTRY WILL STILL NOTIFY GUATEMALA.
IF IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH FOREIGN AFFAIRS-WHY DO YOU WANT TO NOTIFY GUATEMALA!!!!!!!—-PLEASE ,PLEASE DON´T!!!! LEAVE THE BELIZEANS TO HANDLE THEIR OWN PROBLEMS!!!!! HA! ha! HA!
At last someone using their head. Prove who the are before actually pointing fingers
Do the people of belize really mean anything to this idiot? we were quick to make compensation to the guats when he illegal loggers were killed, how the hell then is mr conorquie not as important as these illegal aliens. it seems that this jackass already sold us out to guat. maybe someone should give a piece of rope , then direct him to the nearest tree, with instruction as to how to hang himself, if he can or maybe he need help with that too.
When will these incompetent fool stand up for the Belizean people? Yes I understand we have a very sensitive issue with Guatemala but guess what? you must stand and defend the Belizean people not to try wash your hand and pretend that nothing of importance has happened. We need to replace you man, we need someone who has the people of Belize at heart to be foreign minister.
My comment has no political influence because I will be critical of any “P” that does BS but what Sedi had to say was correct!
You need to treat a murder as a murder until the investigation shows that the people responsible for the murder are indeed from Guatemala and that they came into the country illegally committed a murder and ran back across the border; then it becomes a Foreign Affairs matter.
Why I agree with Minister Arrington’s position is because this incident requires cautiousness. However, I do not agree with some of the statements that he has made, Nevertheless, a sense of calmness must prevail in order to ascertain the facts. Clearly, Minister Arrington should be firm in his resolve. It should be made emphatically clear that if in fact these men are Guatemalans it will be our expectation that the Guatemalan government will take full responsibility for this incident. Which you would mean that certain compensations will be expected to be paid by the Guatemalan government. In short, this incident occurred near the Guatemalan border and without a doubt the men have indeed fled across the Guatemalan border and this is enough to warrant a much stronger statement from the government of Belize and the Foreign Ministry. It should be made clear that no stones will remain unturned until we get to the bottom of this incident. Lastly since it has been established that these men have fled to the Guatemalan side our expectation should be that the Guatemalans will assist in hunting them down and return them to Belize to face our justice system. Our expectation should be nothing less nothing more.
of course, elrington da wa guatemalan.. he has dual citizenship dats y he always claim dat Belize has an artificial border… he no worry caz da no he breda.. shame n disgrace…..resign now…
