World Pediatric Project Helps Kids With Facial Deformities
For the tenth consecutive year, a team of plastic surgeons will be conducting a two-day clinic in Belize. Doctors Alan Burke and Howard Krein will be heading this year’s mission which for the first time will be held both at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital in Belize City and the Southern Regional Hospital in Dangriga. The team of plastic surgeons will evaluate and, in some cases, perform surgeries on persons, twenty-one years and younger who have facial deformities, scars, cleft lip or palate, or some other defect on their eyes, nose or throat. The program is being held through the World Pediatric Project in Belize and the medical services are available free of cost.
Milagro Garel, Country Representative, World Pediatric Project Belize
“Normally we work at the southern regional hospital for this particular mission. Doctor Allan Burke and Howard Crine have been visiting and we do tons of cleft lip and palate surgery, but also we do revision of scars and they have also been doing some reconstructive surgeries on ears, microtias, which means abnormalities on the ears. Also some maxilo-facial surgeries and we try to keep with surgeries that are not available in the country otherwise. And that is the type of services that we offer. Any child from birth to twenty-five years of age we consider pediatric….sometimes, we also do adults who otherwise were in accidents and have not been able to access the surgeries. As a matter of fact, we have put an impact on somebody’s brain, the skull and we bring in the implants from the states. We plan as well for the surgeries, people that have had severe burns and also need the services can also come. They just need to call us. Our numbers are 223-7300 or my cell phone 610-2606 or my assistant Candice 626-6091 and our office is at 3581 Sunrise Avenue and we will be in Dangriga on November second which is next week Saturday and the clinic will start from 7:30 on the morning. So we are asking anybody that knows of any patient that can benefit from this clinic to come and visit us.”
