Stephen Buckley Back In Court, Case Against Dennis Lopez Adjourned

Steven Buckley

Steven Buckley was wounded by police back on April twenty-eight 2010. Buckley was hit in the head by multiple pellets fired from a service weapon.  The construction worker and two other persons were shot by police while they were in a dodge van on Kraal Road. The shot from a sixteen-gauge shotgun left pellet wounds in Buckley’s head and face and since then, he has been unable to work. The cop that pulled the trigger four years ago has been identified as Police Dennis Lopez who has been charged with attempted murder.  This morning, Buckley went back to court but the trial against Lopez was adjourned once again. Buckley says:

Steven Buckley, Shooting Victim

“When I went to the court, they said that the case adjourned till next year.”

Reporter

“Any reason why?”

Steven Buckley

“They say dah due to the lawyer fi di police man noh come soh dehn say dehn di adjourn it again sake ah that.”

Reporter

“Now you were shot in April of 2010 and this is now going on four years that your case hasn’t been called up. What are your thoughts? It seems for whatever reason this case is taking rather long to settle in terms of criminal procedure.”

Steven Buckley

“It’s taking too long because then right now I don’t even got no help to deal with my kids dehn; I noh even got no money fi deal with my pickney the way how I want deal with them. Right now mi big son deh dah college and I need wah footwear fi mi son and noh even got that.”

Reporter

“We understand that in related news that you are discussing a further settlement with the government for your injuries as a result of the incident in April of 2010.”

Steven Buckley

“Well according to mi lawyer, he di deal with that.  So dah he wi have to get to.”

Reporter

“But the fact of the matter remains that you have to still have to wait a little longer for justice.”

Steven Buckley

“Yes. I just have to wait a little longer till justice next year. So till next year.”

In August 2013, a hundred thousand dollar settlement was awarded to Buckley by the Government of Belize and it is reported that a further settlement is in the pipeline. Lopez is being represented by Senior Counsel Simeon Sampson.

I was just about to feel sorry for you and say I’d anonymously send a care package and donate a few things for you. However, after reading, WHAT THE HELL DID YOU DO WITH $100,000 IN LESS THAN AN YEAR? Unless Simeon and medical bills got the bulk of that money, you shouldn’t even be in this situation. SMH. A mind is a terrible thing to waste. You should have at least had a decent house or, in the process of completing one with the next disbursement. No, money can’t bring you back to perfect health but your long term goal should be to have something to call your own so you can lay your head should your health deteriorate. If I’m not mistaken, when your plight was aired earlier this year, people commented that you were partying it up. A fool and his money are soon departed.
