Belize City Man Murdered Inside His Home

Turning to crime…There was a murder in the Old Capital on Saturday. The lifeless body of a well-known street figure was found in his house on Casaurina Street. Ernel Welcome Junior was shot once to the forehead and left to die in the house. While police are following all leads, there are no arrests and it is believed that Welcome Junior’s past had come back to haunt him. Duane Moody reports.

Around nine a.m. on Saturday, residents gathered on Casaurina Street as police and scenes of crime personnel cordoned off a portion of the street near its junction with Mahogany Street in the Lake Independence area. Inside the house at number four Casaurina Street, police discovered the lifeless body of Ernel Welcome Junior. Welcome Junior, who also goes by the name Ernel Kenroy Young, was found murdered with a single gunshot to the forehead. The forty year old, who walked with a cane, had been living at the house for some time. It is believed that he was murdered early on Saturday but up to news time, no one has been detained in connection with this latest homicide in the Old Capital.
Welcome Junior has a long history with the law. He was arrested and charged for the October twelfth, 2000 shooting death of millionaire heiress, Therese Blake Ayuso. According to reports, while locked up by the police, Welcome Junior managed to shave his head and eyebrows to avoid identification by a witness, who allegedly saw him near Blake’s home prior to her abduction and murder. On February twenty-first 2002, he was freed of the charge after Supreme Court Justice John Gonzalez directed the jury to find Welcome Junior not guilty of murder. The decision came on the heels of a no case submission by attorney Simeon Sampson, who represented Welcome Junior at the time of trial.
Welcome Junior was also known as a notorious figure on the streets. According to police, he was a discreet drug peddler who had been charged for numerous offences from drug trafficking to firearm offences.
Neighbors and distant family members did not wish to appear on camera to speak about Welcome Junior.
